Really, I almost put this in 'Humor.' Anyone who takes the Coulter heifer seriously is obviously suffering from cognative degeneration syndrome aggravated by street medications a'la Rush Limbaugh.
quote:
Secondary Addiction: Ann Coulter on Evolution
Part I
By James Downard
Conservative pundit Ann Coulter's latest opus, Godless: The Church of Liberalism, has sparked considerable media fuss over her acidic characterization of activist 9/11 widows: "I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much." To which she added pusillanimous ad hominem masquerading for wit: "And by the way, how do we know their husbands weren't planning to divorce these harpies?" Coulter (2006, 103, 112)

All this is grist for debate on literary civility, of course, but Coulter's tome landed in my crosshairs on account of the third of her book (the last 4 of 11 chapters) devoted to assailing the Liberal's Creation Myth, Darwinian evolutionary theory. Her sashay into matters scientific delightfully illustrates a common theme in sloppy thinking. Coulter is a secondary citation addict.

Like a scholarly lemming, she compulsively reads inaccurate antievolutionary sources and accepts them on account of their reinforcement of what she wants to be true. It never once occurs to her that she might find it prudent to check on the reliability of those sources before accompanying them off the cliff, either by investigating critical takes on those sources, or by actually inspecting the original technical literature directly.

This starts naturally enough with the commonest activity of antievolutionists: fielding the "usual suspects" of authority quotes mined over the years by critics more concerned with succulent text strings than evaluating far more recalcitrant data.

Thus Coulter (2006, 201) invoked the late paleontologist Colin Patterson, who stuck his foot in his mouth on several occasions by criticizing how evolutionary theory was applied to taxonomy issues without noticing the creationist in the audience taking notes or even recording it. Coulter's particular rehash was obtained secondarily from a February 2001 Tom Bethell American Spectator piece (p. 10 actually, though Coutler's endnote didn't specify pages). She did not explain any context -- such as that Bethell was replying to a conservative correspondent appalled at the magazine's publishing of the antievolutionary Wells (2000). Bethell (1999, 20) had previously fielded the quote, by the way, so was merely trotting out a favored authority quote. Of course, to have learned that Patterson did not harbor the level of doubt about evolution that his out of place quotes seemed to suggest would have required additional research (such as has been done at the Talk Origins Archive). But such follow-ups are not Coulter's forte.

Fuck it. Bashing Coulter is too easy . Indeed, I hope some day she'll come up with something that might make a challenge, but I'm not optomistic.

Ripped off my son-in-law's garden this morning (he's been out of town for a week and I'm house sitting) -- the very first of the yellow squash! Had that bad boy for breakfast, griddled in a little margerine with 1/2 an onion and a piece of sliced fatback with the rind trimmed. Seasoned it with a dab of cayenne, and a goodish load of black pepper. Didn't need salt due to the fatback.

Huh…

And all of this time I thought yellow squash came from the supermarket.

Well, it do, sort of...... but it ain't really the same squash. Compared to that from the garden, you might as well be eating the innards of stepped-on palmetto bug -- squashed yellow instead of yellow squash.

The supermarket sells produce that has been grown to maxium, practical size and lost much of it's flavor. From the garden, you get squash picked at just the right time -- tastey and with the rinds still tender. And you don't fall victim to the chemical warfare of the factory farms.

The Russian sunflowers are growing like mad in Kevin's garden. This fall, I'm going to have a couple of big seed heads to roast, shuck and eat like popcorn, or put in pancakes and cornbread. And the peppers, hot & sweet, and the pole beans and corn and melons, and....., and..., and this year, I just don't think he made his garden big enough to support his family and me as well, even with the winter garden that will be planted when this one is finished: Collards, sprouts, califlower and other, good stuff.

Are ya eating yer heart out yet....?

I'm surprised the loathsome Ms. Coulter even cites secondary or tertiary sources. Then, she's probably too lazy to make up everything all by herself.

Your squash story reminds me of an event in the early 1970's. I was with a girlfriend, camping at Big Basin State Park, in the coastal hill redwoods near here. Adjacent to the park was a run-down farm, with tipis and tents scattered about, and a big, largely untended garden. A group of about five ragged, dirty little barefoot kids came up to the low fence separating the camp from the farm, and talked with my girlfriend and myself. We learned that the kids subsisted mainly on zucchini grown in their hippy commune. No impugning your son-in-law, Filthy, who may have a complex and extremely well organized garden, but zucchinis (and, I assume without evidence, other squash varieties) themselves require about this much cultivation effort:

1. Plant seeds.
2. Smoke weed for several months.
3. Harvest zooks.

Perfect for a hippy commune.

The kids told us their parents were away for an extended spell, being "enlightened" up north by the Guru Mahareesh Ji. I guess child-rearing also followed squash rules.

And I'm sorry to hijack. Sure, I am!

My elder daughter makes an excellent zucchini bread, but beyond that, they are not among my favorites. My favorite is acorn squash, but Kevin failed to plant any.

Squash are among the easiest veggies to grow. Few, if any, require anything special.

Coulter is so poisonous that I think she should classified as a controled substance, right along with methamphetamine.... Indeed, of the two, the crank is the least harmful.

Too skinny. If she shaved her head she might look better though she would then resemble those post-war French women that sleep with Nazi officers and were punished by having their heads shaved.

Diversity, independence, innovation and imagination are progressive concepts ultimately alien to the conservative mind.

She's just full of shit.

She probably doesn't believe most of the rubbish her hatefull mouth spouts, it just helps her sell books.

Her audience wants to hear how evolution is a lie and liberals are satan, so she just tells them what they want to hear.

She makes a shitload of cash doing it.

My own theory, based upon Coulter's rather masculine and robust frame, as well as her hateful politics, is that she is actually a post-op transsexual, who was once the former Klansman, David Duke.

Ya know, I find it odd that this is supposed to be the same person as this. Or this.

Holy crap! Are we supposed to believe that Ann was following the Grateful Dead around Europe 16 years ago?!?
