She said, "Whenever I post..." and did not contradict that blanket statement later. You'd better jump all over that and ask a lot of irrelevant questions so that people can blame her for derailing the thread.

I found this interesting little diddy as I was looking for something else. It seems while the government wants to prosecute the NYT for treason for publishing the leak on government surveillance programs, Bush, et al, also put out a preemptive strike in the Wall Street Journal when they knew the bad article was going to be published.
This post has a lot more examples of fake news and the extent of it.
As to what to do about it, Gorgo, You start by exposing the practice and the extent of it. The news media has a harder time getting away with the practice when it is out in the open. These sites look like good watchdog/activist sites.

I included the last one which focuses on commercials especially those aimed at kids. I think that's a critical issue as well. Teach your kids about marketing scams techniques.
Yesterday I gave my kid a short lesson on how big companies like Verizon, WA Mutual and VISA make big bucks charging you for fees if you don't pay close attention. He saw a commercial for Verizon saying text messages were free to other Verizon customers so he texted away. He got hit with $15 extra last month not realizing we weren't on "that plan". Then he got hit with $23 extra this month because even though he cut back, the billing cycle was such that he didn't know he was being charged for 2 months into the excessive text messages. They are charging him 25 cents per message.
While my checking is free, if I accidentally use overdraft protection it's about $40 in fees. And missing a VISA payment by a day costs almost $100 since interest is also added. (I normally pay the whole thing off every month.) Those companies want you to get charged those fees. They make half their money that way. VISA even drags their feet getting the mail out of their PO box if they can get away with it. They lost a class action lawsuit for doing that very thing.[/end hijack] |

Actually, Dave, I was giving you a hard time because you probably deserve it, but I'll give credit where credit is due. You are correct about most of what you said in this post. I am a little bitter and tired and that's not your fault or anyone else's.
Part of it is a reaction to some things that happened on another site, part of it is because of some things said here. Most of it is probably a lot of other things. I'm tired. So, I'm going to be a little more careful about what and how often I post here until I deal with that.
My apologies if I gave anyone too much of a hard time. I don't think I did, but I probably am not too good at measuring that accurately right now. I think I've apologized to anyone who has told me that I insulted them, and attempted to correct any statements that I've made that are false. |
