Scientists in Australia think that microbes create gold nuggets as part of their effort to detoxify the heavy metals in their environment. According to this AP article at CNN.com:quote: Thar's gold in them thar microbes

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Researchers in Australia have uncovered evidence that a tiny microbe may have the Midas touch of Greek legend, capable of turning dust to gold.
Findings reported in the July 14 issue of the U.S.-based magazine "Science" suggest a bacteria known as Ralstonia metallidurans may play a key role in creating gold nuggets and grains.
A group of scientists led by German-born researcher Frank Reith collected gold grains from two Australian mines more than 3,000 kilometers (1,900 miles) apart, and discovered that 80 percent of the grains had the bacteria living on them.

I can so see a science fiction story coming from this. Isn't nature just fabulous? |

Actually it says specifically that they dont make gold from dirt.
They purify gold laced ores or something like that...perhaps creating a vein where there was only ore... |

Never trust headlines. Even I, who believe in Truth, will twist and distort reality to get a catchy phrase into a headline. I can't help myself. I learned this behavior while working on my high school newspaper. Don't trust me, don't trust journalists.
In fairness, the article did say, "... capable of turning dust to gold," and dust is kinda like dirt. Also, a topic heading must be a terribly short phrase. Expect poetic license.
