Hey Mick, when all the other kids were reading the Hardy Boys bilge, I was reading I, the Jury. I once got suspended from school for writing a book report on Kiss me, Deadly. Not long after that, I got busted again for reading The Twisted Thing in study hall.

I'm not really all that good a writer, certainly never at your level, but it was you who encouraged me to take up the pen in my small way, and it was you who first showed me how glorious the written word could be.

I raise a final glass to one of the best, Mick. I owe you big.....

Mickey Spillane was what he himself called a "writer," not an "author." He simply wrote, and wrote simply, stories that people wanted to read. Not "lit-ra-chure," but lurid, brutal stories filled with the good old winning ingredients of sex and violence. And it wasn't just common folks who read his books. His novels were, and remain, a guilty pleasure for many who would not be caught dead with a a single Spillane novel on his bookshelves.

So long, Mickey, Pal. You'll be missed, but hey, Mick, everyone dies.
