I just got this from my Austin Atheist Community message board. Incredible what she says.

From the board....

http://switch3.castup.net/cunet/gm.asp?ai=214&ar=1050wmv&ak=null

"Here is a powerful and amazing statement on Al Jazeera television. The woman is Wafa Sultan, an Arab-American psychologist from Los Angeles . I would suggest watching it ASAP because I don't know how long the link will be active.

Make sure to double click on the video to enlarge the picture so as to be able to read the English translation."

Edited to add...I first couldn't view the movie when clicking on the link. If it's the same for you, do this -- right click and save target to open. Somehow that got my player to play it.

Here's a NY Times article about the above interview and bit on her life.

Wow! That lady laid it down strongly, right in the face of a Muslim cleric who called her a "heretic." The cleric fiddles with papers, dumbfounded and seemingly unable to deal with anyone -- particularly a woman! -- who would dare question his basic assumptions.

Wafi Sultan says:

"The clash that we are witnessing around the world is not a clash of religions, or a clash of civilizations. It is a clash between two opposites, two eras. It is a clash between a mentality that belongs to the middle ages and another mentality that belongs to the 21st century. It is a clash between civilization and backwardness, between the civilized and the primitive, between barbarity and rationality. It is a clash between freedom and oppression, between democracy and dictatorship. It is a clash between human rights on the one hand, and the violation of these rights, on the other hand. It is a clash between those who treat women like beasts, and those who treat them like human beings."

You go, girl! What a thoughtful, even courageous, statement.

How ironic. It takes an atheist to show theists how they should practice their religion.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Great clip. I don't know if it's the popularity, or just a flaky connection on my end at the moment, but I found the streaming video very choppy and a tad annoying for that reason.

For anyone that's interested, there is an official, but partial transcript, here.

I'd did a quick search and found a full tanscript. I can't vouch for it's accuracy, and haven't checked it entirely yet, but it looks legitimate thus far. I found it here. It's a 12 page pdf document.

Yo:

The woman in the video won; the guy who called her a heretic lost. He was right however: she IS a heretic, which comes from a Greek term: hairetikos, which means ABLE TO CHOOSE.

Too bad the guy verbally assaulting her isn't able to....choose, merely insult and separate; sort of like someone else I can think of who wants to do his first veto. (I think he should append a signing statment to his veto that says, "Now, of course, I disavow any responsibility which may cause people to die in the future, because they couldn't live long enough for cures that may stem from...heh! heh! stem cell research. I like that little play on words, don't you?
I've really been doin' a great job with words!")

Insofar as the woman in video being able to choose: she cuts through all the Bushit that some are trying to wedge everyone with.

OY!

Reading the full transcript reminded me of 'pick your favorite Fox News program'. Dr. Ibrahim al-Khouly maintain a reasonable tone, yet incredibly distorted view of reality, until near the end when he said,
quote:
Most of those who rule the west are bastards and illegitimate children, does she want that fate for us?

justifying on of Dr. Wafa Sultan's early assertions.
quote:
You, Sir, should not call others by names they havn't chosen.

al-Khouly left me wondering whether he knew that he was fundamentally lying, spinning for Alah.

One thing I like about Dr. Sultan: She speaks with confidence and good eye-camera contact. I can hear from the rhythm of her speech that she seems to be speaking Arabic in a rather poetic manner, and what she says seems to match the text translation on the screen closely.

"You're a heretic, there's no reason to rebuke you", said the cleric as he looked away shuffling papers.

I assume that's the equivalent of saying, "it's in the Bible, that's all the evidence I need."

The words were true except the claim, "no Jews have bombed ....". In essence the Jews and Neocon Fundie Christians are just dropping the bombs from the air instead of from a fanny pack.

She reminds us that the bulk of the human beings in the world have been superceded by these fundies and power lusters on both sides. All in all, an excellent tirade.

She also reminds us maybe we should watch more of Al Jazeera to really see what they broadcast instead of assuming it's just carnage and anti-American propaganda.
