Katrina (noun): Any disaster which might have been at least partially prevented, or had its effects mitigated, but for which an inept or deliberately negligent emergency response actually worsened the effects of the calamity. Example of its use as verb: "The doctor really katrina-ed my migraine problem. Now I still have the headaches, but my antimigraine nanites have gone all von Neumann on me."

The first recorded use of use of "katrina" in this sense was in a newsblog reference to Mel Gibson's 2010 remake of "The Ten Commandments." The movie was declared to be "a katrina," after two thousand Egyptian and Israeli extras were drowned as the parting of the Red Sea was being shot on location.
