I wasn't sure if this should go in religion, politics, or social issues, so I put it in general skepticism. http://www.kentucky.com/mld/heraldleader/living/religion/15195224.htm
quote: It sounds like a decree from the Middle Ages or the Middle East -- a ban on "infidel" books.
But it's the law of the land in Kentucky.
Under state statute, "no book or other publication of a sectarian, infidel or immoral character, or that reflects on any religious denomination, shall be used or distributed in any common school."
The law also prohibits schools from teaching "sectarian, infidel, or immoral doctrine."
The state's book ban does not apply to the Bible. Kentucky courts have ruled that the Christian and Hebrew scriptures are not sectarian.
Wow. If Christian and Hebrew scriptures aren't sectarian, what is?
Who would have ever thought laws like this would exist in Kentucky?
I love this stupidity: quote: "It was passed, no doubt, at a time when there was a common public consensus about morality that I think frankly no longer exists," said former Kentucky Baptist Convention president Hershael York. Today, "we live in a state that has a lot more different religions. The definition of infidel is obviously going to be problematic."
Yeah, right. If there was common public consensus then why would the ban be necessary at all? Obviously it was meant to discriminate against someone.

So infidels isn't just a Muslim term? That alone is interesting. I thought Christians used the term, heathens. |

I've usually heard the word used by, or attributed to, Muslims. But the word is of Latin origin, and is probably most often used as an English translation of an Arabic term, "kafir."
(Edited to reference "kafir.")
