Remember the guy who went on BBC news claiming to represent Dow Chemical and Union Carbide in the Bhopal incident? It forced Dow to admit they were not taking responsibility for the accident that killed and maimed thousands.
They did it again in New Orleans today. One of their members managed to convince Mayor Nagan and Governor Blanco he was from HUD and the government was reversing it's policies and would be re-opening all the housing projects. As well he said a number of corporations would reverse course and right their previous injustices such as Wallmart would withdraw its stores in New Orleans and help small businesses re-establish themselves.
Interesting how the story can appear to be a "cruel hoax", a story with two sides, or a clever political statement depending on who reports on it.

What a wonderful, eye-opening stunt that was! These guys know how to use a new kind of agit-prop jiu jitsu against the inertia and stupidity of greedy and incompetent organizations. Wow!
Yes, the hoax ribbon-cutting did apparently leave some people who were hoping to return to their home disappointed in the extreme. But it wasn't really the Yes Men who denied them their homecoming, but HUD's real policies.
No surprise that it was Faux News that described the hoax as victimizing Katrina victims once again.
The stunt has given attention to the neglected plight of poor New Orleans residents in a way that would be hard to match with a multi-million dollar professional promotion campaign. My hat is off to the Yes Men.

I don't think it dawned on the Faux reporters the irony in their attitude. It is only a cruel hoax because they haven't had the proper help from HUD. |

But in this particular context, shouldn't it be slightly relevant to comment on what YOU think of such pranks?
What do you think? Did it actually help anyone; waste time that was irrelevant; explain anything we already don't know; make somebody feel good?
What? |

O_I asked: "Tell me, then, what was wrong with that report?"
Well, if you mean Fox's "report," the problem is the usual: They cannot see anything humorous or positive in anything that highlights the faults of their boy Bush and his administration. Like you, Fox News is absolutist in their defense of Bush, to the extent that they are quite willing to make themselves look foolish or stupid in that defense. Rather than discuss the actions of the Yes Men as a controversial but effective stunt, they pretend to swell up with indignation, and blame them for "victimizing" Katrina survivors -- whom they were actually attempting to help. Coming as this does from a pure right-wing propaganda machine, the irony of Fox's attack is immense.
But most people are now onto Fox's ham-handed methods. Increasingly, they are preaching only to a shrinking choir.
