This is from BBC News:
quote:
A German art student briefly fooled police by posing as one of China's terracotta warriors at the heritage site in the ancient capital, Xian.

Pablo Wendel, made up like an ancient warrior, jumped into a pit showcasing the 2,200-year-old pottery soldiers and stood motionless for several minutes.

. . .

The terracotta soldiers were

tomb 2,200 years ago

Police confiscated Mr Wendel's
costume and sent him home

Notice how, even when being disrobed by police, Wendel maintains his military poise -- and is still standing on his pedestal. And note the cop on the left, grinning.

As Mr Wendel's "performance art" did not harm any of the ancient relics, he was not arrested or charged but given "serious criticism", the reports said.
I'm honestly surprised the Chinese authorites were so cool about the whole thing. Given their reputation, this stunt must have taken some guts.

Indeed, but perhaps wiser heads prevailed and saw the publicity value. I suspect this is so, judging from the posed photo being released, and Herr Wendel's family not being billed for the cost of the cartridge used to shoot him in the back of the head.

Lucky for him they didn't bury him in the back row!

Funny, I had to read that twice.

I think the Chinese have mellowed a bit under international criticism since the whole shooting students with tanks thing.

It also probably helped that what Wendel did is hard to interpret as anything but an artistic salute to China's culture and history.
