I know I had to butcher my signature line:
It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known. Carl Sagan, 'Pale Blue Dot'
But we're only allowed 255 characters.

That was said in regards to a picture of Earth, from 4 billion miles out, as viewed from Voyager. Right? If me could have recalled the site where me saw it, would have posted the picture, too. Couldn't, sorry...

Wonder if this will work?

Yes, that's the one me saw, alright, but 'blown up.' Like the perspective of this one, me own self. Ol' Carl was and remains, a hero of mine.
"Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there - on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam." No wonder "If" by Rudy Kipling didn't fit.
Ya, that's a fabulous picture! I ran across a site several months ago, and I'm sorry I can't remember where, that zooms from viewing a large slice of the universe, down to the haze of probability that is an electron. It's pretty cool, and for me provides the same sense of scale. Has anyone else seen that site?

Badger: I think you're referring to The Powers of Ten. There are several websites out there that deal with this idea, and info about the original movie can be found on the Eames brothers site. |

Sorry, maybe it's too early in the day or what but I don't get that reference. 'If' has long been a favorite and inspritational poem to me. I have a feeling I'm taking the meaning too seriously OR perhaps not deeply enough. What do you mean? LOL, coincidently, this morning on TV they were showing the movie 'The Man Who Would be King', somehow I find that amusing. Oh well!

A very nice quote from "Pale Blue Dot" can be found at www.randi.org" target="_blank">http:www.randi.org I think it was last week's commentary. Quite a moving passage. There's several world leaders and elected officials I'd love to hit over the head with it. Lisa

Zandermann, Thanks! That's the one.
Snake, my reference to "If" was for the signature line that Trish was referring to.

Thanks for letting me know. I'm still not getting it, but that's ok. After all, I can't be a hypocrite and expect someone to keep explaining it to me when I am not smart enough to understand.

Altered my sig again due to requests that it be offset from the rest of the text.

Those is truly beautiful pictures. I like best the one where Earth is tiny, because it shows the distance from which it was taken. I would guess that there probably are many planets with intelligent life somewhere in this Universe. However, communication (at 299,792,458 m/s) with any of the possible civilizations (even the nearest) would be a little difficult to keep going; distance probably would make communication impossible within a single lifetime of any creature.
