I guess it was some two or three years ago that we commented upon a Virgin Mary tree stump in New Jersey. Well they built a ramshackle shrine of sorts around it, and now the city's gone and torn it down. They say it was a safety hazard but I suspect that it was an eyesore. Or perhaps both. quote: PASSAIC -- Onlookers wept Thursday at the pictures of the pope left in a pile on the ground amid torn flowers and debris.
They were among dozens who were saddened and enraged at the city's hasty removal Thursday morning of a wooden structure that shields a gnarled tree stump that appears to bear the image of the Virgin Mary – a site that many in the community consider sacred.
Monday, the city's code enforcement inspectors notified caretakers Luis and Enelisa Irizarry that the shoddy wooden structure beneath Route 21 at the intersection of Hope Avenue was an imminent safety hazard. The Irizarrys were given 24 hours to remove the wooden structure but did not do so.
I think they're missing a chance, here. Tear the building down, blast out the stump and put it up on ebay. Surely a nice stump it worth more than some stale and moldy, cheese sandwich with a bite out of it.

Morons. Worshipping a friggin' dead tree stump.... Why don't they get that:
A. Mary almost certainly didn't look anything like the popular depictions of her.
B. There is nothing at all in the NT about Mary's Image, or any christian image, appearing to anywhere to anyone and making a place or thing holy. There's no foundation for this nonsense anywhere..... is there?
C. Human brains are pattern recognition machines. Because we're not perfect, and because the natural world is chaotic, we sometimes find patterns where there are none. Like in clouds that look like bunnies. And burnt toast that looks like a Western Eurpoean image we imagine Mary to have been like.... |
