Just noticed a new NEO (near Earth object) posted on the Spaceweather site for Aug 31. I'm not sure when they posted it, I could have missed it.
Anyway, with a miss distance less than halfway to the Moon, that is darn close. Yet I didn't recall any fanfare so I thought I'd see what was being reported about it. Low and behold it was even worse. No one found it until 8 hours before it came the closest, and the miss distance wasn't calculated until only a couple of hours before the closest pass.
I wonder how excited those discovers might have gotten before completing that calculation?
