The Bush Administration has now taken the liberty of making plans for the continuing occupation of Iraq for years into the next President's term. President Gore himself may have other ideas.
From MSNBC News: quote: Army plans current Iraq troop levels until 2010 Top officer says future planning 'is not a prediction' of how war is going
Updated: 10:29 a.m. PT Oct 11, 2006
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Army has plans to keep the current level of soldiers in Iraq through 2010, the top Army officer said Wednesday, a later date than Bush administration or Pentagon officials have mentioned thus far.
The Army chief of staff, Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker, cautioned against reading too much into the planning, saying troops levels could be adjusted to actual conditions in Iraq. He said it is easier to hold back forces scheduled to go there than to prepare and deploy units at the last minute.

That should have been the plan from the beginning. Before the war started I kept saying it would take 5 to 10 years of occupation afterwards.

Yes. Saying that to the public at the time of the prosecution would not have gone over well. Now that we are stuck in there, it doesn't matter. |

It would be better that the Administration knew it would take ten years and also knew that would be a hard sell to the American public. It would be worse if the Administration did not know it would take ten years.
At this point, I have no idea which option was in play at the beginning.

I think the record is pretty clear, Luke, that they all believed the fantasy, the mission was really going to be accomplished as soon as Saddam fell. The record is clear Bush et al refused to listen to any other prediction. Such an ignorant position also resulted in the failure to plan for and manage the aftermath of the initial march on Baghdad when there was a window of opportunity missed which could have resulted in a completely different outcome.
This fantasy belief, IMO, also led these a-holes to think they knew better than everyone else. That made it easier for them to lie about the hazard posed by Saddam and make the 'Rove playbook' false link in people's minds that Saddam was involved in 9/11 in order to implement a "plan of attack" which is also well documented to have been written in Dec 99, before Bush was even sworn in.

It would have been even better if this so-called "administration" had known that Iraq was a detrimental misdirection from the real enemy temporarily ousted from Afghanistan and now likely hiding in Pakistan. My take on this is that they actually want to maintain an on-going war somewhere in the world for the benefit of their investments and civil and military contractors. Being Neocons, they think of their personal wealth, political power and personal gain far above the protection or benefit of average America citizens.
