British Gen. Richard Dannatt basically says Britain needs to get out of Iraq.

Quote from the story linked below while it was breaking and before it was edited out: "...he had "more optimism" that "we can get it right in Afghanistan." Now it replaced with a more complete quote: "I think history will show that the planning for what happened after the initial, successful war-fighting phase was poor, probably based more on optimism than sound planning..."

CNN:

This seems to be unraveling further today. Yesterday he said Britain should "get ourselves out sometime soon because our presence exacerbates security problems..."

Today he said: "...we should pull out sometime soon, but that comment needs to be placed in the context of the campaign and the campaign plan..."

Further in the article Blair is wiggling around the statements so as to say: "What he is saying about wanting the British forces out of Iraq is precisely the same as we are all saying."

Tony Snow slithered out to imply that the reporting on the General's initial comments were manipulations by the Liberal press.

If the English pull out before US troops do are the Republicans in Congress now going to call cafeteria "Bangers & Mash" "Freedom Sausage"? Maybe the General knows more that he's saying and is looking out for his troops.

Diversity, independence, innovation and imagination are progressive concepts ultimately alien to the conservative mind.

"TAX AND SPEND" IS GOOD! (TAX: Wealthy corporations who won't go poor even after taxes. SPEND: On public works programs, education, the environment, improvements.)

The statements made by General Dannatt were courageous telling of truth, with his troops in mind. Obviously, he's now under orders to backpedal, and to try to downplay what he'd originally said.

I wonder how many American generals are thinking along the same lines, but don't quite have the balls to say it in public?

The General did the right thing, but there are many that say he should shut up and leave the politics to politicians.
It is about time men of his stature spoke up about wars started by politicians. If only we could get these pollies in the ring against each other. It would save a lot of lives.
The pollies love to sacrifice the lives of their young countrymen for their own egos.
My father fought in the second world war in New Guinea fighting the Japanese, they were moving on Australia, this was a just war to be in, but unfortunately Australia has not been in any just wars since.
