The self-immolations among both NeoCons and fundies continue apace. Now, Congressman Bob Ney (R-Ohio) has finally resigned his Congressional seat, a full seven weeks after agreeing to plead guilty to charges of corruption, conspiracy, and making false statements. quote: Scandal-tainted Ohio congressman resigns
POSTED: 7:18 p.m. EST, November 3, 2006
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Rep. Bob Ney of Ohio, who pleaded guilty last month in the Jack Abramoff influence-peddling investigation, resigned from Congress on Friday.
The Ohio Republican, who had been pressed to quit by fellow lawmakers, sent a letter of resignation to House Speaker Dennis Hastert, according to Ney's chief of staff, David Popp.
"I can confirm the letter has been delivered to the speaker," Popp said in an electronic mail message to The Associated Press. The speaker's office would not confirm whether it had received the letter.

According to Wikipedia:
quote: Ney's voting record is considerably more moderate than has become typical of Republicans elected in 1994. Democrats credit him with bucking his party's leaders and standing his ground on issues important to his mostly blue-collar district, such as championing the needs of the beleaguered steel industry. In 1999 he was a prominent part of the "Stand Up for Steel" campaign, which united the steel industry and steel unions in a fight against low-priced imports. In 2000, he was one of a handful of Republicans who backed an effort to block permanent normal trade status for China, a position that put Ney at odds with party leaders. In 2001, Ney was one of three Republicans to vote against the USA Patriot Act. In 2005 he voted against President Bush's free trade agreement with Central American countries (CAFTA) and against Republican budget cuts to Medicaid and after-school programs.

Indeed, Mycroft, you nailed me on that one.
It's true. Democrats in the House have had in recent years to make certain adjustments in their expectations about their colleagues across the aisle.
Nowadays, they find themselves genuinely shocked and delighted if they find a Republican Congressman who is to the political left of Attila the Hun.
