From Vietnam, Bush "sees the light" in Iraq cause POSTED: 2:44 a.m. EST, November 17, 2006
HANOI, Vietnam (FP) -- U.S. President George W. Bush said Friday the United States' war in Vietnam three decades ago offered lessons of hope for the American-led struggle in Iraq.
Hanoi George: President Bush stands before bust of "Old Goaty," Ho Chi Minh, at the site of another war he missed. "We'll succeed in Iraq until we quit," Bush said shortly after arriving in this one-time war capital.
The president said there were lessons to be learned from the divisive Vietnam war -- the longest conflict in U.S. history -- as the United States wages an unpopular war in Iraq. "I wonder what those lessons are?" Bush asked. "Maybe one of them is that we were loyal to our allies, like Old Goaty behind me.
"We tend to want there to be instant success in the world, and like our victory here in Vietnam, winning in Iraq is going to take a while," the president said.
He called the Iraq war a "great struggle" and said, "It's just going to take a long period of time for the ideology that is hopeful -- and that is an ideology of freedom -- to overcome an ideology of hate. But we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, because we are winning the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people. Just like we did here."
