Swedish particle physicist/jet pilot/cosmonaut trainee Christer Fuglesang will finally launch into space.

Contrary to other nations who "bought" their places on space missions bypassing the list of "hopefulls", Crister Fuglesang is a mission specialist. That means that without him, the mission is a no-go.

This is a historic moment for Sweden, and I'm proud of our first Astronaut.

Woo-hoo! Congrats to Sweden indeed! Neat, ain't it? Don't ya wish it were you? I sure wish I could go. Is Fugelsang going to stay on the ISS and do physics research there?

Damn...

Launch aborted due to weather.

So we have to wait a few more days before it happens.
However, this can be blesing in disguise: With a later launch date, we'll be able to visually observe the shuttle docked to the space station from Sweden. Had the shuttle launched tonight, we would have missed that.

As do I... Though I'm not physically fit for it anymore, as my hip is busted and expecting a hip-replacement at some near future.

No, hardware upgrades of the Space Station itself. Power-units and stuff.

Hell, I know nobody would take me, probably even if I had tens of millions to pay for going to the ISS. (Stroke, being 61, etc.) But IF I could, I would. I think I'd get around in microgravity better than I do on earth. But they'd have to shoot me with a tranquilizer gun to get me to return to earth.

Just travelling by bus longer than 20km could potentially make me sick unless I'm sitting in the front facing forward... I'd puke my guts out in no time at all, unless they shoot me so full of Promethazine that I wouldn't know up from down.

I'd probably feel better in space, too.

And here he is, Christer Fuglesang, the first Swede and first Scandinavian, in space. And he's got the suit to prove it! Fugelsang once was a Swedish national champion in Frisbee, winning for longest time aloft. He took a Frisbee with him into space, along with an iPod with Abba songs.

He's also an atheist.

Where's the SFN patch, HalfMooner?

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

I settled for slipping in an SFN member. Christer will have to join SFN for himself.

Nice one, HalfMooner! I didn't even see it until after you pointed it out. Very skillfully done indeed!

Thanks, Christer! Christer Fuglesang went spacewalking with fellow astronaut, Robert Curbeam, and the two were able to at last retract the balky old solar panel that has been such a problem. Well done!

If there wasn't a hype already on Swedish tabloids, there will be now. Christer Fuglesang is now a national hero.

To me, just going up in the Shuttle is heroism.
