GOP Leadership clears itself, former
Congressman decries "wrist slap" to pages

WASHINGTON December 8, 2006 (RNN) -- The House ethics committee said Friday that teenage pages had been negligent in not protecting Republican leaders from unfavorable news disclosures sparked by their sexual advances toward a former Congressman. But the pages broke no actual House rules, according to the report. The ethics panel also completely exonerated both itself and GOP House leaders.

No one will be reprimanded, according to a report released by the committee, prompting one former Congressman to call the committee's conclusions "just a slap on the wrist to those dirty little boys, when what they really need is a nice over-the-knee spanking."

Former Congressman Mark Foley:
"Like being victimized all over again."

"What bothers me is that no one in particular was held accountable," said former Rep. Mark Foley, who had been forced to resign in disgrace. "It just continues to show us that no one wants to discipline these tender, innocent-faced, but thoroughly naughty boys."

Mark Foley had served six term in Congress, representing Florida's 16th District. Foley resigned from Congress on September 29 when it became public knowledge that teenage pages had repeatedly tried to seduce him. Though Foley had told the GOP leadership of the advances, he had failed fill out the standard Man-Boy Incident Form as required by House GOP rules.

Whew, I dodged a bullet there. I was scared that you'd found a near identical article in The Onion.

A few weeks back, I had a fantastic, and obvious, idea for a story. By some fluke, I got to wondering if The Onion had already done such a story -- it seemed right up their alley. So I searched their site. Bingo!: Not only had they done the story months earlier (and better than I would have), I also realized I'd read it.

My bright idea turned out to be a vague memory of what they'd already written. Sooner or later, I'm going to write one like that, based upon a memory that I've mistaken for a inspiration.

Great little bit on the Mark Foolery scandal, Halfmooner. Reminded me (The Onion, again) of this little ditty from a few years back....

"We are all connected; to each other biologically, to the earth chemically, to the rest of the universe atomically."

"So you're made of detritus [from exploded stars]. Get over it. Or better yet, celebrate it. After all, what nobler thought can one cherish than that the universe lives within us all?"
