"Apollo" film set becomes star attraction at theme park Universal City, December 9, 2006 (HP) -- Universal Studios today opened the "Project Apollo" film set to the public. The long-sealed studio set is where the historic moon scenes in the Apollo film series were filmed.
Universal Studios' theme park. New attraction is in the upper right. From 1969 to 1972, a successful franchise of moon landing movies were made by Universal, with technical advisers from subcontractor NASA. The movies were made at a time of tense "Cold War" sci-fi rivalry between Universal, Paramount Studios, and MGM. Six of the epic Project Apollo films were produced. Public interest in the series finally began to wane, as members of the hippie demographic which had supported them either moved on to heavier drugs, or became yuppies. The final movie, "Apollo 17," was released in 1972, to a generally disinterested reaction by both critics and the public.
The lunar set, untouched and undamaged after 34 years. Neil Armstrong officiated over the ribbon-cutting for Universal's new venue. Though Armstrong won only a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor for his portrayal of the Mission Commander in the first movie in the series, he became an instant popular cult figure regardless. Armstrong still draws crowds by cameo appearances in both movies and television.
"Making the Project Apollo was the high point of my life. I can live with my acting being compared to Chuck Norris," Neil Armstrong quipped.

What you believe to be true is merely misinformation spread by MGM during the Sci-Fi Cold Wars.
