Great fun.
You'll probably like how he gets applauded for some smacking down of Falwell's stooges:
quote: Many of the questioners announced themselves as either students or faculty from Liberty, rather than from Randolph Macon which was my host institution. One by one they tried to trip me up, and one by one their failure to do so was applauded by the audience. Finally, I said that my advice to all Liberty students was to resign immediately and apply to a proper university instead. That received thunderous applause, so that I almost began to feel slightly sorry for the Liberty people. Only almost and only slightly, however."

I've seen that clip 3 times now already and keep going back to it. It's Dawkins at his best, in my opinion. Witty, provocative, but never really rude. |

My opinion exactly. Reality can be harsh sometimes but it is never rude. |

I also like his manner of understatement sometimes. Like when he is talking about how thinking the earth is 6000 years old means you are off by a factor of one million. Dawkins: "That is not a trivial error." I nearly spilt my beer when he said that. |

What are you looking at? Haven't you ever seen a pink shirt before?

I don't think the people who challenged him from Liberty were exactly the choir. And they asked the most questions… |

Well, now it seems that Ham is going after him...
quote: We've warned you about them before on our website—but now they're on a much more aggressive march all across America. No longer are they just staying in their classrooms or writing books and articles in the comfort of their offices. They are “the new atheists,” and they are aggressively going after your children, your liberties, and your faith!
[bunch more crap]...As we begin this new year, I ask you to consider what you might do to partner with us. The website and future museum are wonderful ways we can counter the atheists' message of meaninglessness and hopelessness—and offer the precious gospel instead. We're making great progress, but still need funding to make this happen. If our website has blessed you, I ask for your prayerful consideration of a gift to help us finish the museum this spring.
You know, Ham should really compare how Dawkins acts, with how his fellow AIG people, like John Sarfati acts! Just do a search on the AIG site for his articles, and see how he tears off atheists! |

Loose Translation:
"Quick, look away! Science and reality are scary and cold. Our message, although total bullshit, is happy and light (except for the part where you fear for your eternal soul when you have even the slightest natural thought, lust, desire, or sense of self preservation). We don't pay attention to that fancy book learning or evidence based thinking, but ignoring reality cost money so every penny helps (expecially when those evil atheist have all of the other advantages but numbers and funds, like reason, logic, evidence, and even reality itself.) I finally got around to watching the two videos of Dawkins speaking at Randolph-Macon. (I have a low end DSL connection.) I was most impressed. Rather than the bitter, aggressive evangelist for atheism that he is portrayed to be by the fundies, I saw a most likable and polite aggressive evangelist for atheism.
But I can now understand why the fundies are so ready to throw hatred at Dawkins and the "New Atheism": They fear his message, and himself as an effective messenger. They've essentially never had to combat open atheism before. Now along comes a guy who can take on several dozen of Falwell's goons and make them look like fools, and do it all politely.
I guess I'd be afraid of him, too.
