I was talking to Boron10 about this last night on the phone. The jest of my argument was that it might be good PR to be offended as a group, publicly. In private, it's my guess that the “No Atheists in a Foxhole” thing does not offend most atheists.
Look at the apologies that Mel Gibson was forced into after “offending” Jewish people. Hell, I wasn't offended. I just thought he was/is a bigot and, well...nuts. But it did do my heart glad to see him have to grovel and apologies. It just wouldn't have been nearly as much fun if all he had to say was that he was wrong. A public apology had him eating much more public crow, which is a good thing.
As for Ellen Johnson, I saw here speak at TAM4 and she did not come off as a wimp out type to me…
