a new zeland fundi has submitted a proposal to the NZ government education ministry to teach flat eartism, as proven in the bible, instead of atheistic round earthism.

Hmph.

Tried the link and got told that it was FORBIDDEN, and I didn't have permission to access it. Pretty snotty attitude, if you ask me.

Ah well. There's lots of places that would prefer that skeptics stayed away. Cowardice, I calls it.

AUCKLAND - Pastor Brian Tamariki of Density Christian Life Community Fellowship today issued a demand to the Minister of Education for "the Science of Flat-Earthism, as taught by the Bible, to be taught in all Secondary School science classes in New Zealand."

"Jesus Christ said 'the truth will make you free.' We're simply asking the Government to allow our children to hear the truth, not the lies of Round-earthism," said Brian Tamariki to reporters. "For too long we have been indoctrinated and brainwashed by the lies of Round-earthism, which as is well-known has been completely discredited by Quantum Physics."

Pastor Tamariki has also submitted a proposed Flat-Earthism Science Syllabus to the Education Minister, which explains the Bible's conception of the Universe.

"The Bible clearly explains that we live in a three-tiered universe," explained Pastor Tamariki. "At the middle level, as the Bible teaches, is the earth, which is flat - as anybody can plainly see if they haven't been
brainwashed by Round-earthism. Above us is a solid dome, with its foundations at the ends of the earth. The sun, moon and stars all travel along this dome. And below us is Hell. Modern Scientists thought that they had discovered something 'new' when they discovered that Earth has a molten core. But already, thousands of years before, the Bible knew about 'the Lake of Fire.' The Bible says it, I believe it - that settles it."

after this is the chapter and verse from king james on why earth is flat etc.

There just ain't no way to argue with that kind of logic.

NZ is a long way from the dark heart of fundy-land, and the Kiwi editors may not have realized just how close this parody is to the truth. This is one reason I gave up writing conspiracy theory parodies, a few examples of which appear on this website (shameless plug).http://www.skepticfriends.org/guest5.asp
http://www.skepticfriends.org/guest4.asp
It's just too hard to come up with anything crazier or less likely than the bilge that various quacks manage to pass off as the sober truth.

I've heard from about half a dozen people who apparently thought that New Conspiracy Theories was serious. One of them sneered at me for not knowing that a hydrogen fuel cell would be better than the "gasoline generator with a great big air tank" in deep space, and recommended that I try reading something besides my own writings. Another one accused me of "spreading right-wing hate
speech" and suggested that I might be jailed if I tried it in Canada.
Were these folks serious? Given the proven limits of gullibility, there is just no way to know.

Speaking of the Earth being round, why is it round?? I think I know but I don't know how to explain it.

I think it has to do with the interaction of attractive forces between particles and the conservation of angular momentum in the formative time after the big bang.

Why oh why is the Earth round around a merry-go-round?

Actually it has to do with the structural strength of rock, or any other material we want to use to make a world. Rock just isn't strong enough to make a cubical or pancake-shaped world the size of the Earth--it bends and fractures and crumbles into a sphere. The asteroid Ceres is big enough that the strength of its self-gravitation shapes it into a sphere, but on smaller asteroids like Eros the rock is strong enough to resist being squoozed into a sphere...and so Eros can remain potato-shaped.

(And that's pretending we could make a world out of cold rock. But most every large world went through a period of intense heating, which melted the core and encouraged cosmic spheriodalism beyond what I described above.)

The same sort of considerations put a practical limit on the size of Earthly mountains, I believe. In a John McPhee book on geology I think he wrote that the Himalaya are just about as big as one can make mountains on Earth, and they're starting to melt and deform as their roots are shoved into the Earth by the weight of the peaks above. I may have misremembered that bit, though.

Actually, the Himalayas are still growing, because India is still ramming its way into Asia.

Once that process stops, though, they will slump somewhat -- in fact they already are, but less quickly than the upthrust is occurring.

I have read that this occurs in large part because of micro-inclusions of water in terrestrial rock, and that mountains can stand much higher on worlds that have much drier rocks, like Venus.

Anyhow, to sum up the answer, Megan... Earth is round because of its own gravity, and because it's not spinning fast enough for that to make much difference.

one wonders why the bible believing creationists reject the clear evidence of the bible that the earth is flat and proclaim that all of renaisance astronomy is a great atheist conspiracy. we know that the big bang model cannot be true, since the event is not described in genesis.

it seems that the bible is the literal inerrant word of god except when its convenient to see it as metaphor.

by the way, in the original post, i did not realize the article was satire, because it so closly resembles real creationist logic and dogma.

There are just some things that are supposed to be thought of as figuratively literally true, literally figuratively true, and literally literally true.
