Can't you just feel the love emanating from Dr. Gary Merrill ?

quote:
BAKERSFIELD - A family is turned away by a local pediatrician, they say because of the way they look.
The doctor said he is just following his beliefs, creating a Christian atmosphere for his patients.

Tasha Childress said it's discrimination.

She said Dr. Gary Merrill wouldn't treat her daughter for an ear infection because Tasha, the mother, has tattoos.

The writing is on the wall—literally: “This is a private office. Appearance and behavior standards apply.”

For Dr. Gary Merrill of Christian Medical Services, that means no tattoos, body piercings, and a host of other requirements—all standards Merrill has set based upon his Christian faith.

“She had to go that entire night with her ear infection with no medicine because he has his policy,” Tasha Childress said.

Merrill won't speak on camera, but said based on his values and beliefs, he has standards that he expects in his office.

Isn't there something in the holy babble about helping the least of thy bretheren? And where, exactly, is it written "Thou shalt not haveth thyself tattooed"? The doctor looks like just another self-righteous jerkoff to me. And just who is he to decide that someone with tattoos and/or piercings isn't "christian" enough to have the good fortune to be treated by His Assholiness. I hope the insurance plan kicks his sorry ass out and replaces him with a pediatrician who actually cares about a sick kid.

The foundation of morality is to . . . give up pretending to believe that for which there is no evidence, and repeating unintelligible propositions about things beyond the possibliities of knowledge.

I think that doctor should have his license to practice suspended, until he promises he will treat sick kids! If he won't, make the suspension into a permanent revocation. Bastard.

The guy is a prick, but nowhere is there any rule that a doctor must treat anyone except in an emergency.

Doctors can sign themselves off a case, no reason needed. In a private office they can refuse care to anyone, no reason needed. The only time they have any legal or professional obligation to treat is in an emergency.

That said, the guy is a complete asshole for refusing to see a child because he disapproves of how the kid's mother looks.

There is one good thing about doctors, there are almost as many of them in the phonebook as there are lawyers. If a doctor is a prick, like this guy, you probably don't want to trust your children to his care anyway. If a doctor is a religious fanatic, like this guy, odds are you definitely want to take your children someplace else anyway.

His medical license is in no danger over this issue. But anyone who has been refused care at his office should file a complaint with the better business people. Tell your friends not to use that doctor, etc.

I still haven't figured out which parts of the O.T. christians cherry pick and which parts they don't...seems to vary depending on what they can get away with legally.

Or, whatever they feel suits their god delusion at the moment.

First do no harm. Not, first insure no harm can ever befall. In this case, I agree with Dude that the most harm may be done by having this guy as a doctor before his denying a patient.

Two causes I think,

One: prior moral conviction or moral belief they were taught. ie tattoos, piercings, and long hair are of the devil.

Two: Convenience. ie ignoring the dietary requirements or women's roles.

I emailed this article to PZ Myers, who did blog about it today. Maybe others sent it to him as well.
