So, has anyone else noticed the kook level rising back at the BABB? As the Official Dood of the board I feel I cannot comment on such people as JW, Prion, the latest HB guy and all that, but it would give me a vicarious relief of tension if someone else ranted here a bit. ;-)

You must be speaking of the return of Patch. I found it unnerving when Bob Dole referred to himself in third person. Or perhaps the emergence of Chris Kincey. Yeesh, does he work for FOX or what? He should have called his post 20 insults for the scientific community. Then there is the whole spermigenisis thread where someone claims to have proof of life on Mars and moons of Saturn. What are these people smoking and why haven't they offered me any?

You want to hear a rant about JW? Okay I'll oblige.
Sometimes a really really good thread will start. The subject matter may be unfamiliar to me, but with careful reading, thought, and sheer bloodymindedness, I can start to understand the concept.
It's usually at this point I can count on JW to "oh yes but" and totally obfuscate the issue. The thread is lost at this point.
I saw the 20 questions post. I started to read it, then realized it was the same old HB rehash. Wait long enough, and we'll have another facinating debate about JPEG artifacts and compression.

cranks/kooks on the BA board...
It gets so tiring to read the same nonsense over and over again...people who insist that they don't *need* to understand science/math to talk coherently about them...their opinions are as good as anyone else's...etc etc etc
Over there (and here, in some threads), the ability to string together nice-sounding phrases takes the place of intelligent thought.
At least over there, though, the folks who are spouting theory/supposition and calling it fact are engaged by the majority.

Howdy, folks! You may have wondered what in the wide, wide world of sports happened to Rubysue (referring to myself in the third person, to see what it feels like). I must admit I got a little tired of the non-sensical discussions and nastiness and putdowns in some of the threads I've been involved with, so I've been laying a bit low lately (and I've also been busy - typical in the summer). It looks like nothing has changed on the BABB and perhaps it is worse than usual. I also silently lurk on the space.com boards (I posted once, which probably perplexed the hell out of the regulars) and they've been overrun recently with spammers, "alternate" physics nuts, hoaxers, vulgar spewings, nasty insults and general paranoia. Some of the regulars who have been posting on that board since the beginning have given it up permanently(how sad). What was once a nice forum for learning and sharing about space and astronomy has been invaded by mouth-breathing trolls intent on ruining everyone's day (and, I confess, as a lurker that the trash is often more interesting than the educational stuff, which says something about my abased standards, I guess).
Is there something in the water or are we being invaded by microscopic moron bugs that soften the frontal lobes of the average internet surfer, creating a vacuum of reason and logic?

I couldn't resist, I went over to BAbb and went after Rick on "Babb elitism" and, of course, Chris Kincey, for his "20 questions" [sic].
I seem to have been fixated on horse analogies today: "it is not elitism to call a horsethief a horsethief" and "hate to beat a dead horse, but SOME dead horses have it coming." I thought about some references to horse manure, but managed to find alternate terms.

Good response to JW. The idea of having evidence for his accusations has probably never crossed his mind. Science bashers of all kinds seem to be obsessed with authority, either assuming it for themselves or projecting their own authoritarian outlook onto their opponents. They apparently see the world as a whirlpool of conflicting authorities, with each position and belief based on its own set of authorities and nothing else.

excellent, BA! I've been thinking to reply to him myself, but I like my blood pressure where it is...besides, I'm just an amateur.
As to how he'll reply, my guess is that he'll either "never see it" or come up with some response like "of course you'd say that -- proves my 'elitist' point and I don't have to answer you".
(And have you heard from any of us lately how much we appreciate that site? Thank you!)

Between JW and Sequester, I'm getting red in the face just reading that board most days now. Maybe I'll just start avoiding threads they're involved in 
BA, I side with Zandermann... he's likely just ignore it. Nice flame though  I give it a 9 of 10!
