A dear friend of mine from college called me yesterday and is convinced the Illuminati are taking over the world in 2006. For those of you unfamiliar with the Illuminati they are a suppossed secret society of a ancient reptillian like sect that have ruled mankind through many destructive means for eons by manipulating the goverments of the world. They have been linked to Wars, European royalty inbreeding programs,(39 American President are all linked to just 2 European Royals) the fall of Atlantis, Human sacrifices, the fourth dimension ect....I believe their symbol is a pyramid and a third eye or something. I am only minimally knowledgeable about them. In college I remember them as being on campus as a Peace Movement through positive thought control myself. It has been a long time and the internet stuff is very weird.
Anyway this friend has left his job, moved to the mountains out in Idaho(The poor Northwest has seems to becomeing an Insane Asylum) and is preparing for them taking over the world from the fourth dimension in 2006. I would advise anti-psychotics and hospitalization if he were a patient of mine but this friend caught me from out of the blue.I would like to hear about it if anyone else has heard of this because I would like some idea about what he has gotten himself into. He has me worried. I need some help here.
Delusional or not he is as convinced of this as some of my fundamentalist family are about the Rapture happening soon. Actually there is a syndrome that happens around significant worldly events such as visiting the Holy Land, planetary aliegnments, comets, the change of centuries and especially the Millinium psychosis so many people went through with the whole Y2K hysteria.
I am just interested if anyone else has a more definate knowledge about this 2006 Illuminati thing. I admit I am stumped here. I want to help him and I need information to do it.

That is a strange version of the illiuminati story. Most people I know, who believe in the Illuminti still existing today, think that they already have control over the world.
There are some version, that extend the 18th century bavarian secret society far into the past connecting it to such things as Atlantis.
The Takeover scenario appears to be part of a christian end-time prophecy thing. There are many christian nuts who have taken the already existing heaps of Illuminati lore and equated it with their "New World Order". They usually add something about the anti-christ.
A pure Illuminati believer, who thinks we face some sort of invasion, without any religious connotations is new. The Date also appears more like a christian thing. 2006 does not feel like a date the Illuminati would choose to take over the world; there is no way to make a 23 out of it.
Are you sure your friend is not a standard Christian Apocalypse believer who has just using the Illuminati thing as a minor detail?
Specific arguments to convince somebody that the Illuminatus are not real are hard to come by because the whole belife is so diverse.
For a genral overview about the Illumintus conspiracy you could read the Novels by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson. Every good library should have "The Eye In The Pyramid".

I enjoyed "Focault's Pendulum" very much, which is a fiction based on a hodgepodge of different conspiracy/evil secret society myths. A good read if you like Umberto Eco. He brings in the illuminati, the templars, the rosicrucians, the masons, etc.
It's all the same crap with a different name. The evil THEM. THEY control the world. THEY have all the power because THEY know all the secrets and THEY don't want anyone to know about it. It makes a great movie plot, but in the real world evil organizations don't hide in secret, they start TV ministries.
Doc, I'm sorry to hear about your friend. Sounds like he just has the kind of fantasy prone personality that lends itself to belief in this sort of thing. If he's not a danger to himself or mentally compromised then he has every right to waste his life playing fantasy games in the mountians. It doesn't make him psychotic because he believes in something stupid, unless he believes it because his rice crispies said so. Frustrating thing to watch if it's a friend. You have my sympathy. I would talk to his family and see what can be done to convince him to get some therapy. You're the doctor, so you'd know better than me what the options are there.
Um... Is that my beer? |

I read a history of the Illuminati a couple of years ago. Lessee if I can remember some of it.
I don't recall the dates, but the Illuminati was a Belgan organization patterned after, but not affilated with the Freemasons. They were suspected (never proved) of sedition along with all of the rest of the usual, ghastly crimes including those against nature. The government put them down, in no uncertain terms, after only a few years of existance. The orginal organization never recovered, although there are a lot of wishful dreamers calling themselves 'Illuminati' today.
Hope this helps.

http://www.skepdic.com/illuminati.html You were close filthy. Try Bavaria. The skeptic's dictionary has a rundown on the illuminati and the folks who believe the conspiracy theories. Shari, it sounds like your friend has been reading too much David Icke. Always sad when it happens to someone you know. I hope you're able to encourage him to get help. Lisa

Argh! I should have recognized that one. I probably did not want to remember this kind of idiocy.
Hitler was a Rhotschild the Rhotschilds are Reptiles and all of THEM are descendants of Charlemange...
Did he start giving a concrete date for a planned alien Inasion now? I would think that this would be a bit counterproductive to his efforts to sell us books about this stuff. Or are there others building on his ideas who came up with 2006?

Wow, so am I! My uncle is VERY into geneology, has made numerous trips to England, and has dug up some real interesting stuff. Apparently, we're also cousins to Princess Di.
Then again, I'm guessing that if you were in a room full of people of European decent in the U.S.A. or England, it'd probably be hard NOT to find a decendent of Charlemagne.

Yes, that does sound like they are mixing up too many stories togather as DVF said. I have to go to class now but look up the movie 'Brotherhood of the Bell'. Later, nlm

I know he isn't involved in any sort of Christian thing because in college he was one of the few people at the time I actually told I was an atheist because I just got tired of defending myself and explaining "No, I'm a Satanist. That would mean I believe in God" to people. I may have been considered a "hippie" but my freinds in med school were pretty straight. We became freinds when he said that the only reason people needed a god was because the cheifs and medicine men of early tribes needed someone higher then them to blame when something bad happened.
I think this is a "millineum psychosis" type of thing. It looks without a god to blame he has invented the illuminati to blame for his unsatisfactory life. It is a shame as he is a virologist and worked a lot with electron-scanning microscopic. I guess he got trapped in a world of things so small maybe he needed to invent something big.
As for the illuminati I read some more and it would make good sci-fi which I admit I do read a lot of as my escape. Going places where anything is possible is more fun then realism which may be what happened to my friend. He then went on to tell me how to cure the leukemia with these electron charged vitamins and a lot of other new age things. New Ageism ranks right up there in my book with all other sects as pulp.
I hope he gets better or sees the light on his own but people this far into a fantasy do not get out unscathed. He sold his property, lost his job, but he really believes. The sad thing is he has set a date and when it comes and goes and nothing happens what does he do then? He wouldn't tell me to much because he didn't want "them" to find me. He may have called me because deep down he knows he needs the help and as a friend and physician I could talk him down so to speak. I guess it is good he at least called because I have found out he has not been in touch with any of his freinds or family in over a year.
Oh...2 into 6 equals 3 23. You just have to work at it. A good hard core Pentacostal can turn anything into 666 if he tries.

Sorry to hear about your friend.
When the date comes and goes, there will either be an excuse (ie. different calendar....Myan perhaps?) or, on the chosen date, he'll off himself in order to escape "them". Cheery, huh?
Maybe you can talk him down, though. I sure hope you can. It sounds like you two have a connection of sorts.
How would he react to logic? He provided his own counter arguement, and I'm sorry if I repeat someone else's thought here. If they already control the world, why the need to take it over in 2006?
Anyway, best of luck with this. You sure have a lot on your plate. I'll speak for others here and say that if you ever need a hand, just ask.

Just looked up 'Illuminati' at Skeptics Dictionary. It's a great artical and much more complete than the one I read (which I couldn't find). Highly reccommend it.
