Here's one to chew on - Ashcroft lauding the "Christian Nation" diatribe of evangelist D. James Kennedy in Washington recently (from an Americans United press release). Read it and gnash your teeth! What else can we expect from our "anointed" attorney general?

Rubysue I find this very frightening to have someone in that kind of position that supports such an extreme view. I can only hope that the shrub is not re-elected and the damage is kept to a complete minimum!

I havn't read the press release for two reasons:

1: I have an argument going along these lines on another BB.
2: Bush ain't gonna be reelected. First, it was almost a controversy(sp?) to get him into office in the first place. And secondly, the only other son of a prez to become prez was John Quincy Adams and he only lasted one term. Granted he wasn't as into politics as his father, but that's another thread. Also, the economy is going downhill and I have a feeling that by the time 2004 rolls around, people are gonna want someone in office who is gonna turn this country back around.

How long untill the current theocracy.. er.. administration ends?

From the article:
quote:
He even claimed that Thomas Jefferson insisted that the Bible and Isaac Watts' hymnal be used in District of Columbia public schools

Thomas Jefferson however said
quote:
"Christianity...(has become) the most perverted system that ever shone on man. ...Rogueries, absurdities and untruths were perpetrated upon the teachings of Jesus by a large band of dupes and imposters led by Paul, the first great corrupter of the teaching of Jesus." --Thomas Jefferson, _Six_Historic_Americans_ by John E. Remsberg

"I have recently been examining all the known superstitions of the world, and do not find in our particular superstition [Christianity] one redeeming feature. They are all alike, founded on fables and mythology."--Thomas Jefferson, letter to William Short, _Six_Historic_Americans_ by John E. Remsberg

France is starting to look a lot better now. They've recently passed a law letting them disolve cults and organizations once they've been convicted of serious crimes.

Appealing as that may sound, we would have total chaos politically. Plus, a few elected officials do a decent job.

I don't understand how Bush was elected. His agenda was obvious from day 1. I can't believe that the majority (or even a significant minority) of the American people agree with it.

It appears to me that the religious right (Reich) believes that right now is the best time for them to foist their agenda on an American public that they feel (rightly or wrongly) are tired of the perceived hedonism of the Clintons.

We need to have some intelligent public debate on these issues. I have only seen one televised forum discussing the "faith based initiative", that being a 15 minute discussion on the Newshour.

It makes me sick that these bastards are rewriting American history to make it look like the US has always been a highly religious society and that the founders were some sort of Evangelical heros.

Sorry for the vitriol.

Greg.

No it's completely understandable.

I would be very surprised if they have the capablity of rewriting history that completely. They're relying on the if I say it loud enough and long enough someone will believe me. I hope it takes longer to indoctrinate the masses than four short years!

Gore was crippled by his association with Clinton, I feel. The fact that these two men weren't even on speaking terms by the time the election rolled around was lost on most people.
If Bush wants to survive politically, he needs to back off from this religious stuff. I realise he has some big favours to pay back, but this isn't the way to do it. We're an entire nation of immigrants with different beliefs. Besides those of us who have rejected mythology, there are immigrants with belief systems that are alien to christianity,
And we all vote.

Hopefully the fiasco from the presidential election will cause voters to turn out in force in Nov 2004. Maybe we can then make a change that's less opressive.

What america needs is Nader, and an evenly divided senate and house of representatives.
This would cause so much bickering and fighting that very little would get done. Hopefully the Federal Govt. would merely limp along, leaving the average american to live their lives without Govt interference.

Unfortunately, the truth is that the depublicans and repocrats would probably regroup and keep wasting our money as they always have.

Was it Nader or Buchannan that wanted to release the four girls in TX that had commited armed robbery?

Sorry, I didn't have much respect/opinion for any of the candidates this last time. Would have preferred McCain.
