An interesting artical. Seems that some 72% think that it is even now starting in the Mideast.

I feel fine. Well, actually I have a bit of a headache. And finals are coming soon....

Sorry. Bad pun.

Look at the methodology of the survey:

quote:
Mr. Lindsey's Web site, which receives 8 million hits a month, began a poll on interpreting the new Mideast violence, so far garnering an "unscientific sample" of 4,000 votes.
Most — 72.5 percent — agreed with the statement, "I believe we actually are seeing the start of the war that leads to antichrist and Armageddon." Most of the rest said: "I believe it is coming, but this isn't it."

He's catering to a very specific set of people. I doubt that the average American feels this way.

What's worrisome about this is that there's a school of fundie thought which not only sees events in the Middle East as leading to the imminent End Times, but which holds that trying to help them along is a good thing to do.

What the results could be if this sort of thinking were to influence the policies of, say, a hypothetical U.S. government salted with xian fanatics isn't pleasant to think about.

Of course, no-one so irresponsible as to base their thinking on the imminence of the end of the world could possibly end up in a position of power here in the World's Greatest Democracy.

You ARE being sarcastic, aren't you? I hope so.

Hal Lindsay, eh? Still waiting for the endtimes and they're still standing him up. He is like a lonely boy at a high school dance, and that elusive girl, Arma Geddon, doesn't even know he exists, though he adores her. <sigh>
(Isn't the Washington Times the Moonie paper?)

Why is everyone so hung up on the end of the world? The fundies are the worst. The sit around dreaming of an eternity of grace, or some such, and do all they can to hasten their predictions. This is the worst of self-fulfilling prophesies.

Then, the rest of us,(a generalization), give lip service to world problems as we lock ourselves comfortably behind our doors like we have no responsibility, either.

The end times prognostications ain't no big deal, really. Various lunatics were preaching them even before the Romans crowbarred the nails out of Jesus's wrists, and they continue, and they will never shut the hell up. Get's boring after a while.

There's a couple of sites listing some of the more outrageous Armageddon-shouters in the Skeptic's Web Ring. Some of them were downright awesome in their madness, and others are at least good for a chuckle. This latest batch lacks imagination, IMHO, as do their followers (of course).

Ok, here is my suggestion for the improvement of world events.

We build two gigantic arenas. One is set aside for the Armageddon War. Everyone who wants to fight for god is sent to that arena, all christians, jews, and muslims who want to fight and show their dedication to god. Or at least anyone who wants to kill the godless heathens. We can supply extra weapons if they don't have their own. (pay per view anyone?)

The second arena, probably built around the mountain of olives, is the Rapture arena. Advertise it as the place Jesus will return to the world. (can probably pay for the enterprise by the huge price for the good seats. ;))

Then when the two arenas are filled, we nuke them.

So long as we get to see Russel Crowe, I'm game.

Better yet, why don't we just have Great Cthulhu eat them all?

We don't need those people stirring up more stupidity. Fortunately there are some people out there who are wise to people like Lindsey. Check out these links:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/books/1930987021/reviews/qid%3D1002308954/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F0%5F1/002-8986147-4729666 for a look at someone who has critiqued Lindsey. This guy's book is called: "Hal Lindsey's Prophetic Jigsaw Puzzle : Five Predictions that Failed!"

There is also a review I found of "The Prince of Darkness" another book by Lindsey, this one having to do more directly with the "end-times". see this site: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/books/0553562231/customer-reviews/qid=1018313320/sr=1-6/ref=sr_1_6/002-8986147-4729666 Look for the review by: Nico Taudarian. He does a good job of dissecting Lindsey' stuff.

It's about time we let some common sense drift in and get rid of the paranioa (or in some cases, fatalistic hope) of the "end of the world"> Humanity will live here for the long term, let's start trying to take care of this home of ours instead of waiting for a "beam-out"!

Hey if you want to go to a fun site about the end of the world go to www.endtime.com and just so you know they are serious. They used to have a radio program out here in Colorado Springs (Mecca for all things christian). They give all of the biblical "proofs" that the end of the woprld is coming soon. Lots of fun. The only problem with the radio program were the constant ads for his mag and books. Go figure.

Well Filthy,
I just spent some time at that site. That is amazing. Doomsday was come and gone ALOT. I think that Christians would be wise to just stick to the "no man knows the day or hour" line out of the bible and leave doomsday alone. They could save face that way, at least. My dad, a fundy, have always just said "be ye ready." I think that is the only safe answer a christian can give. Thanks for the link though, it was quite interesting.
