Wow:I can at this point confirm that I have found the maximum possible scorn I can have for a sci-fi author, because I cannot scorn any author more than I do Orson Scott Card. What a tool. |

I'm planning. I basically never say no to sci-fi. My wife and I average around 20-25 theatre visits/year and Ender's Game will help us fill up our quota for 2013. We saw Gravity this weekend, and next is probably Thor 2. |

And with the Introduction (which in that edition, seems to be a massive pile of ego-stroking), we're really finished with this book.
At the movies, Ender's Game had a $27 million opening. Number one on a non-holiday weekend, but only $7 million more than the latest offering from the Jackass crew. |

So in five weeks, Ender's Game has taken in $59.4 million. With one more week, Bad Grandpa has earned $98.8 million. And in only two weeks, the latest Hunger Games flick has earned $296.3 million.
And Will Wildman has started his Speaker for the Dead deconstruction.
Edited to add that unlike with Ender's Game, Wildman hasn't read Speaker yet, so this series isn't going to be so well cross-linked. |

I've seen the movie now. I actually liked Ender's Game. But then, when it comes to stories I can usually suspend my disbelief to enjoy it. I haven't read the book, so I can't say how close the movie follows it, that's another potential source of annoyance removed. |

Yeah, looks like the movie isn't going to recoup its $110 price tag. That makes it officially a flop. Don't expect a sequel. |

Chapter one, part three, in which Pipo makes a lot of bad decisions. I think it's the author making those decisions:Is there anyone who doesn't find it howlingly infuriating when a character figures out a vital secret but then refuses to tell anyone else for no good reason and then walks voluntarily into incredible danger? ... This isn't hard. Write something down and take precautions... write a note or something. Don't just Fermat us. That's a jackass move. |

I know that this is an old thread, but I have to say that I had heard the book hyped (it was on several "top ten science fiction books" lists) and checked it out of the library. I took it back to the library with several chapters unread. The protagonist is a total ass, and the entire premise is implausible to the point of insulting the intelligence of the reader. I have tried to read some of Card's other series, but found the author's sensibilities to be disturbing at best. I don't know any more about him other than he is among a handful of popular Mormon sci-fi and fantasy writers, and that he lives in my home state. |
