IN a part of this he says I must translate my values into universal values. He gives the example of abortion, that I cannot claim in an argument that abortion should be illegal based on my faith. He says that any argument must violate a principle of all faiths. This is insane. |
Not violate a principle of all faiths, but that which makes sense to everyone. You basically need a non-religious reason to make abortion illegal is what he is saying.
This is saying that if one religion thinks that murder is ok then it should be legal, since all cannot come to an agreement. Huh?
|
Your not getting it. There are good reasons not to allow murder that have nothing to do with religion. He makes the point in the speech that laws need to be made on things that we all perceive, not on what a few people perceive and no one else can.
I see this as a rather rational position even with the religious tone of the speech. |

Kil.....
Most of us were taught that one of americas strengths was our freedom of religion. We learned that before we got out of high school. Do you suppose that the majority of americans have changed their minds on that? | Kil, I think that far too many americans do not think of freedom of religion as a mandate that any religion, including Islam, Buddhism, Confucianism, and particularly no religion must be tolerated in the United States.
I fear that many are suspicious of orthodox Judaism - look at the constant efforts of the right wing political propaganda machine to paint America as a Christian Nation, rooted in Christian Values!
Too many "Just folks" are pretty suspect of anything that is not red, white, blue and Christian. The Rove Misinformation Machine has done it's work well!
This flamethrower propagation of fundamental Christianity by the Religious Right and their cohorts, the Rancid Rovians, over the past eight years has really brainwashed a lot of people.
In the past decade, I have lived in the South (Kentucky, Tennesee, Florida); the midwest (Indiana and Iowa) Colorado, and currently Idaho. I have done a lot of first hand elbow-rubbing with conservatives, and I am a little depressed at their numbers, their prejudicial blindness, and their willingness to put self over country.
These folks, whether redneck, country-club, or lumberjack are basically much more interested in personal issues like abortion, family-destroying homosexual unions, and taxation.
Now all are being confronted by the stupyfying reality of gasoline prices. If the Democrats can successfully lay the responsibility for this economy-destroying aberration at the feet of the Republican Party, we may win! But they better get hopping! |

Looks like James Dobson, the voice of intolerance, has a different view of Barach's religion.
Dobson responds, per the AP, that "I think he's deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology" and charges that Obama "is dragging Biblical understanding through the gutter."
| Apparently there will be a lot more said by James later today. Should make for difficult reading tomorrow. |

From the Daily Show
We really need shows like this just to show the blatant hypocrisy of the likes of James Dobson. |

Yeah, because your god is better than his god!
WTF Robb? Many times here I think you are more or less rational... and then you go and say shit like this, proving that you are just a delusional nutbag. NO TRUE CHRISTIAN! Is flawed logic Robb.
| I am not implying he is not a true Christian. I am saying he does not seem to be a christian at all (same with McCain). What he says is not even close to the teachings of the Bible. Again this is my opinion. |
