The James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) is pleased to announce that Dr. Philip Plait -- renowned astronomer, author, and skeptic -- will be taking on the role of President of the JREF effective immediately.
The goals of the JREF are to bring critical thinking to the public, expose pseudoscientific frauds, and promote real science and rationality.
"Phil is a skeptic, a scientist, and a colleague, and his ideas and vigor will take the JREF very far indeed. We're pleased and proud to have him take the reins," said James Randi, internationally known magician and critical thinker, who is the founder and outgoing president of the JREF. "I will now be dedicating much of my time to completing my next two books, Wrong!, and A Magician in the Laboratory." |
Phil also announces this on his site.
Time to rub it in to ol' PZ.
This is why Randi is justly honoured; it's good that Phil intends to carry on that tradition.
| I was in hysterics, laughing my butt off. But at that time in my life, I was prey to a lot of pseudoscience: UFOs, the Bermuda Triangle, all sorts of garbage. Watching Randi on The Tonight Show showed me that this stuff can be easily faked, or people easily mislead (willfully or not). I started being more skeptical, and became more of a critical thinker as time went on. It was already inside me to be this way, but it was Randi who showed it to me. |

Wise of Randi to make sure his organization continues when he himself eventually... stops continuing. Phil Plait is a perfect leader for JREF!

You know what gets me? We were just getting ready to offer Plait that job over here at SFN and Randi beat us to it...
