On Swedish news today...

"My" University closest to where I live and where I studied Astronomy, presents the first step toward an HIV vaccine. Through gene-modification of edible plants, the research team developed crops (carrots among others) that contains a special protein which they hope will trigger immune response which will target HIV.

Yes, that's right: eat carrots and become immune...

They also mentioned a few other viral infections that should be possible to target with grown, edible vaccine.

They are now testing on mice, and said if everything goes as planned, human testing should commence 3 years from now.

The research group at Örebro Life Science Center has successfully transformed Arabidopsis thaliana and has gone on to produce several transformed plant lines, which express the protein corresponding to the inserted gene. We have also shown that the gene is inherited by the offspring. Hopefully, the protein expressed by these plants will elicit the immune system in the mucosal tissues during consumption.

Emphasis mine.

dglasgow; sorry; I am not sure I understand your question.

And Doc; that's pretty cool and smart. The mucosal immune system is mostly independent from the systemic one. Therefore, injecting a vaccine has only a limited effect on the immune system in the mucosa.
That do require the antigen to be stable at low pH though, so not every vaccines might be good candidate.

Go science!

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

I'm sorry, dglasgow, but I can't make sense of it either.

They are taking specific proteins from the HIV-virus and implant it in the food. Then they hope that the immune system will react to the protein, and prepare the body to fight it. When the real HIV-virus comes, will body will recognize the protein in the virus and attack it, stopping it dead.
