Kil, political parties are mentioned exactly zero times in our constitution. So you can have 2, or 20, and its not a violation.

Personally I think they are a bad idea. The harm they have done, and continue to do, outweighs their usefulness.

I just don't see how some person running can be viable without some recognizable and identifiable affiliation. Worse yet, some famous person, even an asshole, would have a serious advantage over some person running because of a lack of affiliation to a group (or party, if you will) that the voters could identify with.

I'm not talking about the machines of a Democratic or Republican parties. I'm talking about smaller coalitions (parties) forming a ruling party beholden to the smaller coalitions.

I'm sorry but I think you have to give a name to whatever your cause is. Perhaps this is only semantics, but that name is the party even if it's just a hand full of like minded people, if they want political viability.

If dozens of these interest groups were to coalesce, they would have the power to form a "ruling coalition."

I think in that way, the machine of the two party system would be eliminated, or at the very least seriously weakened.

Yeah. Bidden has a son in Iraq right now.

Yer kidding, right? What does it mean to say, "God protect our troops?" From what? Was he not paying attention before Biden said that?
Sorry, I misunderstood your question. Palin's views are considered fringe radical christian fundamentalist views. Biden, who is Catholic, was just doing what politicians do.

Biden, as opposed to Palin, would not allow America to be turned into a theocracy, even if he has religious beliefs. So his saying "god bless" is not really news.

Sorry, but that's the country we live in.

Or have I still misunderstood the question?

Gorgo.....

Much has been said about Palin's crazy religious ideas, but as long as a "reasonable" liberal can get away with the following remarks without anyone batting an eye, we are in trouble. There is no respect for reality.

Joe Biden
May God bless all of you, and most of all, for both of us, selfishly, may God protect our troops.
My God, Gorgo, what planet have you been living on? For a politician, any politician, Biden's statement is like saying "geshundheit" when someone sneezes. It is almost mandatory. And Biden is a Catholic, at least professes to be one, and a professed belief in God and Jesus is an absolute necessity for a US politician.

Sure, it's stupid and in many cases hypocritical - as I don't believe all politicians are religious. But they all have to put up the pretense, because a large majority of the US population is Christian. You can't run for office in America without professing a belief in God, and probably Jesus too!

But Palin is beyond the pale! She is a preposterous fundie creationist, and the majority of the American electorate sees that as a little crazy, thank goodness!

I would bet money that Obama is no more religious than I am, but he realized long ago that a certain religiosity and connection with a black church was necessary, even mandatory, for his success in politics! And he has been an ambitious politician for a long time!

Look at the "Reverend" titles in front the names of many black politicians. It is important for advancement in politics - and proclaiming oneself a "Christian" (or maybe a Jew in the case of Lieberman and a few others) is a very necessary condition to hope for any success in American politics!

Sure it's the shits, but it is a fact, and any politician that hopes to get anywhere had better know it!

Well, I think you're agreeing with me. I was trying to make a point that was easier than saying the media doesn't slam them for saying Iran (or Iraq for that matter) is a threat to anyone, or that Ahmadinajad said that he wanted to wipe Israel off the map, or that Chavez is a "strongman." I was trying to make a point that we could all agree on. That we live on a planet where this kind of stupidity goes on and we don't have a media that calls anyone on it.
