What the fuck is going on here?
Eight die in US attack inside Syria: official media
1 hour ago

DAMASCUS (AFP) — American helicopter-borne troops launched an assault on Sunday on a building in a Syrian border village with Iraq, killing eight civilians, official Syrian media reported.

"Four American helicopters violated Syrian airspace around 16:45 local time (1345 GMT) on Sunday," state television and the official SANA news agency said.

"American soldiers" who had emerged from helicopters "attacked a civilian building under construction and fired at workmen inside, causing eight deaths," the reports said.

"The helicopters then left Syrian territory towards Iraqi territory," SANA said.

Earlier, the private television channel al-Dunia said nine civilians died in the attack on the village of Al-Sukkiraya, around 550 kilometres (340 miles) northeast of the capital in the Abu Kamal area.

"We are in the process of investigating this," Sergeant Brooke Murphy, a US military spokeswoman, told AFP in Baghdad.

I can see the bastards trying something. Wouldn't be at all surprised if Bin Laden was suddenly 'found'. Or another major terrorist attack on U.S. soil could be allowed to happen, and then blamed on Democrats blocking measures that would have prevented it.

More like an attempt to get Bin Laden just before the election.

Such a thing would sway many voters back to the republican side of things.

Honestly, I think its too late in the game. The destroyed economy and obviously deteriorating mind of McCain have already solidified this election for Obama. All that remains is to determine how large the margin of victory is.

October 1st would have been the time to get old Osama, and for Bush to let McCain take some credit.

Going with the idea that it was to provoke a Syrian response (whether official or terrorist), I disagree. The idea is to scare people shitless into voting Republican, and fear dissolves overtime. The best time to get a terrorist attack for the Republicans would be the weekend or so before the 4th.

Of course, I find the idea that powers in Washington are trying to coax terrorists into attacking to be rather ludicrous to begin with.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Certainly; it must be something significant. One do not cross a border and violate a sovereign nation's border without reasons.

It probably was either a counter-terrorist operation or something targeting a suspected WMD program.
As it was so close to the border I'd suspect the former.

On the other hand, the fact that we have not received an official confirmation from the US suggests to me that the operation was legit and not some last minute showmanship by the neo-cons for the election.

I find the idea of the administration trying to coarse the Syrian into attacking... difficult to believe. Maybe some people in the white house may think it is a good idea (they did toy with a similar idea to try and start the Iraq war, apparently) but I do not believe that either the Pentagon or the CIA would play along...

Just going to have to wait & see, i expect -- with this administration, anything's possible and Pandora's Box has, if not been opened in the Mid-East, is at least unlocked and it's hinges have been oiled, no pun.

Here is some analysis...

According to them, the objective might be to rise the pressure on Syria and, indirectly Lebanon and Palestine.
The stick coming with the carrot of a current diplomatic warming with the US.

The objective being to force these governments to make a choice and, hopefully, back of from their alliance with the Hezbollah, a group backed-up by Syria and, more importantly, Iran.

Ultimately, the idea seems to try and isolate Iran...

I don't know enough to speak to the political implications, if any, of this incident. Except to say that I don't see how anything that could happen in the world, aside from Osama endorsing Obama, is going to help John McCain

Unlike civilian killings via aerial bombings, which are extremely common, a Special Forces attack is probably a bit more focused. I doubt that they invaded Syria to for the purpose of killing eight innocent construction workers.

The Iraq-Syria border is an extremely porous desert area. Just look at it with Google Earth sometime -- you can see the tracks of vehicles crossing the border all over the place, and often see big trucks out in the middle of the wilderness on either side, with their tracks leading back to the other side.

Some strange shit's going on, for sure. Just what, I don't know. But I'm certain the intention of the Special Forces wasn't to kill non-combatants.

Wonder if it may play a role.
I think its impact will actually be limited.
