I'm wishing it a little early 'cause I'll be at my elder daughter's house tomorrow. The family is going to be somewhat scattered amongst other relatives this year, and the up-side to that is that I ain't cookin'.

But there is ever a down side to Thanksgiving: imbecilic editorals in various places by the woefully ignorant, From the Times-Hearld:

A few religious thoughts to ponder
Thanksgiving must be a terrible time for atheists. They have no God to thank.

They do not have the privilege of gathering with family and friends to express gratitude by saying: "Praise God from whom all blessings flow." An atheist on his deathbed faces serious uncertainties. Gazing upward, he pleads: "Oh God, if there is a God, please save my soul -- if I have one."
Sad. But there is a shining bit of poetry to that drivel -- read the comments. Atheists are not going to take it any more.

I found it linked at PZ's along with this dandy cartoon:

Anyhow, I'll soon be off to enjoy roasted turkey that even as we speak is beginng to be brined. I hope everyone on these boards, and I warmly include our religious members of whom we see too little, the very best of this unique holiday; one that is offically celebrated nowhere else in the world.

Happy Thanksgiving to you, too, Filthy! I give you thanks for letting me see that ignorant, hateful, and bigoted diatribe, and especially for seeing the replies from all the thoughtful atheists who demolished it.

Indeed they did, and the American aboriginal peoples have been paying for that mistake ever since. And thus it has always been, everywhere.

I've decided to leave early tomorrow morning and try, probably in vain, to beat the I-85 traffic between Durham & Greensboro. Gawd, how I hate the interstates!

Indeed, as they lovingly raped and beheaded and burned and force-converted the natives, just so they could mercifully raze and pillage and plunder their villages...

Happy Thanksgiving y'all. We do not commemorate it and have nobody to say 'thanks' to (more like a 'fuck you very much'), so there.

But hey, turkey. Always tasty.

Hey! Listen up you god hating moral lacklusters! Every one of those savages went to a better place when murdered by their European betters. These god-fearing crusaders weren't invaders, they were liberators - liberators of the soul! Don't you have any shame revising history with this America hating drivel? And on our most cherished holiday, too. Shameful.

Happy thanksgiving.

By the way, wasn't it Indians and not God who brought the much needed food that first time? I would feel bit pissed off if I gave a homeless guy a meal, and he in turn thanked the CEO of Nokia for it.

It's a bit like what the vikings did to Britain. There was no supposed loving involved there, of course. And my viking heritage makes me feel almost proud about that one... I think I'd like to say thanks...

Thanksgiving is pretty much a secular holiday. But really, your question does demonstrate a lack of understanding about how God works, don't you think?

We got around to thanking the Native Americans in our own way...

Anyhow, Happy Turkey Day everyone!!!

What if that same homeless guy turned around and took your house and killed your kids a few summers later? How would that be?

Basically, during thanksgiving, the pagan native proved themselves better than useless prayer at saving the pilgrims.

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

Well, thanks to the Vikings, the English have a nice nursery-rhyme: "London Bridge is Falling Down".
