Funny you should mention both these in the same post. Tolkien was a professor of English. But he was also a linguist. Having used his knowledge of old and middle English and their development to further process languages with which he was familiar to create elvish and other languages found within The Lord of the Rings. Any linguist who wants to drive themselves crazy probably has the skills to follow the development of any language from it's predecessor to it's current version and see where languages have changed over time to become the differing languages we now recognize. Languages are constantly developing from pidgin languages to creole languages to a formally recognized language constantly. Texmex is currently a pidgin language. 'Creole' in LA (US) is a creole language that has stabilized from it's pidgin origin of French, Cheyenne, and English.

There are worse things upon which to base your belief system than LotR. At least in this book there is concern for the environment, right action, and persisting in the face of adversity.
