Worldmapper uses bizarre distorted maps of the earth to illustrate economic and demographic information. One can learn broadly and quickly using this online resource.
I've already spent hours gazing at these maps, and pondering their meaning. I expect to spend many mopre hours doing the same. The visual aspect especially helps me to absorb the information.
Worldmapper presently has nearly 600 maps. In two of them, I learned something I hadn't known: Both Japan and the USA have among the highest incomes for both their very poorest and their very richest citizens. Not surprisingly, in map after map, sub-Saharan Africa appears to be a basket case in almost every category. India is booming, but maintains vast poverty for much of its population.
Here's three examples of Worldmapper maps:
Wealth, Year 1
Wealth, Year 1500
Wealth, Year 1990
