So, how could this have happened?

No offense, but look where this mess happened. Like we need another financial crisis, from the same country yet.

I'm not mad at the average american, just at the management that's been going on by the gov't down there. They've caused/allowed two huge economic bombs to go off, both of which are affecting the entire effing world.

What's wrong with the regulatory mechanisms down there? At least they caught the guy, albeit too late...

From the first link:
The alleged victims who sunk cash into veteran Wall Street money manager Bernard Madoff's investment pool include real estate magnate Mortimer Zuckerman, the foundation of Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, and a charity of movie director Steven Spielberg, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Among the world's biggest banking institutions, Britain's HSBC Holdings PLC, Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC and Man Group PLC, Spain's Grupo Santander SA, France's BNP Paribas and Japan's Nomura Holdings all reported that they had fallen victim to Madoff's alleged US$50-billion Ponzi scheme.

The 70-year-old Madoff, well respected in the investment community after serving as chairman of the Nasdaq Stock Market, was arrested Thursday in what prosecutors say was a $50 billion scheme to defraud investors. Some investors claim they've been wiped out, while others are still likely to come forward.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

Wow....and I thought that title was held by Amway.

I would rather face a cold reality than delude myself with comforting fantasies.

You are free to believe what you want to believe and I am free to ridicule you for it.

Shermer can probably explain to us ignoramuses how this could happen despite there now being more pages of regulation on the books than ever. Or maybe he'll just explain that this is a natural and beneficent part of capitalism's self-regulation?
