Hi everyone,
I was online yesterday and ran into this. http://www.positiveatheism.org/hist/ellerbe0.htm
It is a little History about the Inquisition and Slavery. There has been no more organized effort by a religion to control people and contain their spirituality than the Christian Inquisition. Developed within the Church's own legal framework, the Inquisition attempted to terrify people into obedience. As the Inquisitor Francesco Pena stated in 1578, "We must remember that the main purpose of the trial and execution is not to save the soul of the accused but to achieve the public good and put fear into others." The Inquisition took countless human lives in Europe and around the world as it followed in the wake of missionaries. And along with the tyranny of the Inquisition, churchmen also brought religious justification for the practice of slavery.
It's a good read and I learned some things that I didn't know. I wanted to share it with you all and see what you think.

Brother, You say there is but one way to worship and serve the Great Spirit. If there is but one religion, why do you white people differ so much about it? Why not all agree, as you can all read the book. -Sagoyewatha,(Red Jacket) - Chief and great orator of the six nations. |

| I've read a number of works on the Inquisition, both the Catholic and Protestant (Yeah, those assholes did one as well, mainly aimed at Catholics, tee-hee. It was a popular sport amongst the devout of the day). This is a pretty good summery of the Catholic version. From my reading, the Church was just as bloody as described in it.
And y'know what? Given the religious attitudes in some circles today, it could happen again. Hell, it already is! I read yesterday that some 50 women were burned to death for witch-craft in Papua new Guinea. And then, there is the gitmo Gulag....
To me, the term: "Heretic" is a badge of honor.

Pops, you read my mind about it happening today.
I too, concidered Gitmo being no different the the Inquisitions. I have also read a little about the witch burnings happening today. There was one post that stated that a woman was dragged from her home, stripped, thrown on a log and burned. I can't recall where it happened but if I find the link I will post it here.
I would like to learn more about the Inquisitions. Could you please email me some links about the protistant Inquisition along with the New Guinea witch burnings?
I am going to share this paper with my Christian friend and see what he thinks about his lovely religion's History. MWHahahahahaha! |

That reminds me. I have a friend who attends church every Sunday. Outside of the God thing, he is a pretty good skeptic. Anyhow, the church is pretty big, they have a school and they call their various sport teams "The Crusaders". My friends suggested that perhaps the crusades were not such a good thing and so calling the teams "The Crusaders" given the bloody history of the actual crusades, was a bad idea.

In 1560, fifty years after they conquered that port and the immediate surrounding territory, the Portuguese began an Inquisition in their Indian colony of Goa. With a brief hiatus from 1774-1778, the Goa Inquisition lasted until 1812.
The Inquisition authorities in Goa destroyed most of their own records when they shut down the their little party, but it is estimated that some 16,202 persons were subject to the Goa Inquisition prior to its hiatus in 1774. These were mainly distrusted "new Christian" converts from Jewry, Islam, and Hinduism, as well as unconverted Jews, Muslims and Hindus.
"Enhanced interrogation" techniques were used, including burning with sulfur, rape, strappado, and burning at the stake.
From Wiki: The first inquisitors, Aleixo Dias Falcão and Francisco Marques, established themselves in the palace once occupied by Goa's Islamic sultan, forcing the Portuguese viceroy to relocate to a smaller residence. The inquisitor's first act was to forbid any open practice of the Hindu faith on pain of death. Sephardic Jews living in Goa, many of whom had fled the Iberian Peninsula to escape the excesses of the Spanish Inquisition to begin with, were also persecuted. The narrative of Da Fonseca describes the violence and brutality of the inquisition. The records speak of the necessity for hundreds of prison cells to accommodate fresh victims. Seventy-one "autos da fe" were recorded. In the first few years alone, over 4000 people were arrested, with 121 people burnt alive at the stake. | The Goa Inquisition was so horrible that, when word of it reached China (hardly a beacon of human rights itself), the appalled Chinese authorities utterly banned Inquisitors from operating in their realm.

| In fairness, the other name up for vote was "The Witch Burners."
