....... who is no position to call anyone a "hack," comes this:
The Economist now knows for sure that Darwinism is more important than science achievement

O'Leary

David Warren, a stalwart hack of the Ottawa Citizen, derides a recent Economist article, “Untouched by the hand of God: How people in various countries view the theory of evolution” (Feb 5th 2009), which allows us to know,
And here's Mr. Warren's chart -- it's quite well done, I think, although I can't vouch for it's accuracy. It seems pretty straightforward to me.

I'm not sure I understand what Denny's squealing about. Aside from Economics, about which I understand nothing, what science does The Economist deal in? Evidently, they do some statistical articles, but that's scarcly evolutionary science.

I confess, I'm a little confused, here, but O'Leary can do that to you. So I'll submit it to better minds than mine. Anybody wanna go at it?

Yeah! We beat Turkey!

Denyse has a long way to go before she can begin to reach even my exalted level of hackdom.

Well, Turkey is at a distinct disadvantage. They are cursed with a delusional Islamist-creato-scumbag monkey on their backs in the form of one Adnan Okbar. Mr. Oktar has fucked up more free lunches than even the Prophet Muhammad his owndamnself.

I struggle and struggle but have never achieved the level of hackness I believe I deserve. I just ain't hacky enough to suit me.... (Apologies to Woody Guthrie.)

One could do worse than aspire to the heights of the great half-cent-a-word pulp hacks, Fil. Someday, I hope to reach that goal.

I can't find Warren's piece online (O'Leary doesn't link to it). The chart is the Economist's, not Warren's.

O'Leary seems to be attempting to say that "acceptance of Darwinism" is inversely proportional to technological advance (what she calls "science achievement"), and as support she links to NASA's home page, an article on Iceland's economic troubles and a bit on the Mohammed cartoons.

Of course, if she were right, Turkey should have a Moon base by now.

I also notice that Japan isn't on that list. I'm pretty sure if it were included, it would further put the lie to O'Bleary's insinuations.

Actually, here's the list as published by the New York Times, this time with more countries included:

"The first principle is that you must not fool yourself - and you are the easiest person to fool." --Richard P. Feynman

PZ has picked up the story:
So, The Economist has taken a chart, stripped out half the data, put it into new colors that make my eyes hurt, and put it on a background with chimpanzees having a snack — said chimpanzees occupying almost half the space allotted.

Shock horror! I am offended! The monkey is unhappy! My sensibilities, in particular, recoil. Someone send the illustrators at The Economist some copies of Tufte's books. I think I'll stick with Miller et al.'s version.

As I said; confusing, but much of her writing is and frankly, I wonder that she makes a living at it.... Oh, wait, she doesn't...
Denyse O'Leary is a Canadian Intelligent design apologist who claims to be a journalist. Her primary means of publication is a string of self-started internet blogs and a few that other people have started that she parasitizes. O'Leary's primary means of support appears to be begging for PayPal donations in order to "feed the kitty" (don't let the imagery run wild on this one, really, don't).[1] Probably her most notable publishing outlet is at William Dembski's blog Uncommon Descent. Other than that there is little evidence of actual journalism. Denyse claims that all non-blog based media is "legacy media" that no one reads anyway.[2] O'Leary appears to be betting the kitty on the New York Times subscribers tuning out of print media and tuning on to her bottom barrel blog sites.

I've said it before: Dense O'leary is a self-proclaimed journalist who is a crappy writer who is attempting to express thoughts and arguments about issues she has little or no understanding about.
