Remember Orbo? Thought it was dead? It seems it ain't dead until the fat banshee sings.
Having watched its "free-energy" Orbo fail in its live Internet demo, I present the new press release I received from Steorn. My own guess is that the press release's timimg is merely a tactic to delay lawsuits:
Dublin, 10 February 2009.
After six years of research and development, Steorn launches the first of the four technology streams associated with the development of Orbo technology.
SteornLab is a range of laboratory and test equipment targeted at organisations developing rotary and magnetic systems. The first two SteornLab products are available to purchase from today.
A second technology range, ZeroF passive magnetic bearings, is scheduled for commercial launch during summer 2009.
The Steorn commercialisation and e-learning platform, SKDB, will launch alongside the much-anticipated Orbo technology towards the end of 2009.
The final testing of the SKDB commences with a call for 300 engineering organisations / qualified engineers to sign up. There will be no subscription charge for those involved in this final testing phase, just a requirement to enter into our standard developer licence agreement.
"2009 represents a turning point for Steorn, Orbo and our other technology ranges," said CEO Sean McCarthy. "It marks the end of a long cycle of R&D and sees us making a strong push towards commercialisation - our plans show the business reaching profitability in the next 12 to 18 months."

I just watched the video at the Steorn site, (link in OP.)
Here's another guess about the new press release. It appears Steorn is selling its own Hall Effect and and "pure magnetic torque" measuring devices, run though computers with Steorn software.
My guess: The effects they've gotten some engineers to attest to are designed illusions due to the programming in Steorn's measuring devices. Perhaps they select honest engineers to evaluate Orbo, but choose engineers who lack the programming skills that would enable them to see hidden tricks built into the proprietary laboratory measuring equipment and/or programs. It's just human nature for some engineers not to admit that they simply can't understand the vital programming, and there's no indication anyone was allowed to review the code, anyway.
This could turn honest engineers into unknowing, instant shills.

The very idea that anyone would test a "free energy" claim using only measuring equipment produced and supplied by the claimant is stupid almost beyond belief.
I'm not an engineer, but I think that I would insist on using instruments manufactured by a known, reputable supplier and that they all be checked out by a properly-equipped calibration lab, just to establish that they do in fact measure the physical quantity they are claimed to measure and what their limits of precision and accuracy are.
Anything else is playing with a stacked deck. Apparently there are engineers in this world who should never go near a poker game. |

Ben Goldacre of Bad Science reports that the "independent jury of experts" convened by Steorn itself has concluded concerning Orbo:The unanimous verdict of the Jury is that Steorn's attempts to demonstrate the claim have not shown the production of energy. The jury is therefore ceasing work. | Undeterred, Steorn says:McCarthy concluded by stating that “during 2009 the company had resolved the key technical problems related to the implementation of Orbo and is now focused on commercial launch towards the end of this year, at which time academic and engineering validation would be released concurrent with public demonstrations”. |
