For those who might be somewhere vaguely near Portland, Oregon, in late March 2009 & are interested, the Northwest Freethought Alliance is hosting a conference at Portland State University from March 27 through 29, 2009.

There will be 3 "tracks" for different interests, including one on Evolution.

Fee is $125. No extra charge, or discount, for rain.

Registration will close once 316 people have enrolled.

More information, including registration form, can be found here.

It looks pretty good, thanks. But I'm only "vaguely near" (651 motorscooter miles) in the astronomical sense, just as I'm only "vaguely young" in the geological sense (63 years).

316? Seems rather arbitrary. That may be because there is really only room for 216 people, which is 6^3.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

316 might reflect fire-code-mandated maximum capacity of the room in which the full-session addresses will be given.

316 is 2^2 x 79. 79 is one of my favorite prime numbers.
