Quite a superb image of a distant galaxy showed up on Astronomy Photo of the Day.
This 'anemic' galaxy is on out there at a third of a billion light years distant.

Here's a larger jpg. Note scattering of more distant galaxies. Phew!

Here's a wiki page on Hubble's replacement telescope due to launch in 2013.

Brief CNN video.

With the economy the way it now is, I hope we can still get this new telescope off the ground in a timely fashion.

"We are all connected; to each other biologically, to the earth chemically, to the rest of the universe atomically."

"So you're made of detritus [from exploded stars]. Get over it. Or better yet, celebrate it. After all, what nobler thought can one cherish than that the universe lives within us all?"

That certainly looks like a crowded galactic neighborhood. Imagine looking up into a night sky and seeing that sight with unaided eyes.

Per the Webb telescope, that should be a great advantage. I do worry that the Hubble will be shut down early due to its advent, however. And I'm concerned that, however carefully it's constructed, the Webb may still fail and be unreachable for repairs.
