I don't know just how bad this news is, but Brayton points out that this is an unconstitutional practice, though it has been going on for over 200 years.
If Obama won't stop it, one can at least hope that he'll be smart when he does it, and does it for the right reasons. Is it possible that this has been done for over 200 years because it's so practical maybe?

The intent of the first signing statements was to guide federal agencies in how to implement new laws. They were used only rarely until Bush, and he changed the intent. Bush's signing statements were just declarations that this new law doesn't apply to him. Fucking asshole. If Obama is doing the same thing, then he'll be an asshole for doing it too.
I'd like to read the text of an Obama signing statement, see how he is using them.

Yeah, we're going to have to see the details of if, and how, Obama deals with this. My own suspicion is that he'll go back to the traditional way signing statements have been used.

Another science blogger has his opinion about this.
