If you go by whole states, there is a lot more blue. But using counties is a better way of showing the concentration of Obama votes, which are largely urban.
This University of Michigan site, from which I got the original county map I processed, shows the red-blue geographical breakdown far better than my words. They show it by whole states, by counties, colored by percentage of votes, and also in physically distorted forms that reflect the population.
