From PZ Myers blog. This is his source...
...they denied a 16-month-old boy food and water because he did not say "Amen" at mealtimes. After he died, they prayed over his body for days, expecting a resurrection, then packed it into a suitcase with mothballs. They left it in a shed in Philadelphia, where it remained for a year before detectives found it last spring. |
Guess what the kicker is?
"She wasn't delusional, because she was following a religion," Silverman said, describing the findings of the doctors' psychiatric evaluation. |
Think of that for a minute...while it means this...person will likely get some serious jail time, it also means that even in an obvious case like this, such psychotic behavour is excused because of religion!

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.
Another example of this guy's lunacy here. |

She was ruled sane and fit to stand trial. Or do you mean to say that her behavior shouldn't be excused from being considered psychotic, that she should clearly be ruled insane?
I don't think that would be a good idea because then all religion would have to be classified as a mental illness, and as much as I would love to see that, it just isn't going to happen. But the shrink did the next best thing imo, and basically said "Look, you religious people don't get to have it both ways. If you want to claim that religious belief doesn't qualify as a delusion, fine, but then you can't turn around later and say you weren't responsible for your actions because you were following a nutty religion."
In fact he noted the difficulty distinguishing between her alleged "insanity" and any other typical godbot's belief system:Psychiatrists who evaluated Ramkissoon at the request of a judge concluded that she was not criminally insane. Her attorney, Steven Silverman, said the doctors found that her beliefs were indistinguishable from religious beliefs, in part because they were shared by those around her. (bolding mine) | So I applaud this decision. If talking to invisible men and believing in the reality of miracles is insanity, then more than half of the country could be considered legally insane. It would be almost impossible to find anyone fit to stand trial.

Yeah, I disagree with PZ on this. Religion, in effect, has been ruled as no excuse for criminal behavior. If you follow a religion into committing such heartrendingly cruel crimes as this, you will be held personally responsible.
This should make a very interesting debate, as it's possible to think of it from either side.
