Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. Camp Quest is lots of fun. I was a volunteer camp counselor (brought my iguanas to talk about environmentalism, taught wood burning, and lead a skeptical discussion with kids about parts of the Bible) in 2001 and 2002 at Camp Quest Classic in Ohio. I highly recommend volunteering for anyone who lives near a Camp Quest and has the time. And of course if you have kids who are of the right age, they will probably find it very fun.
I was blown away by the critical thinking skills of many of the campers. The second year I volunteered, there was this very intelligent 11 year old who had prepared a whole essay of philosophical arguments against the existence of the two invisible unicorns at Camp Quest in an attempt to win the godless $100 bill prize. Many of us thought she should get the prize just because of her incredibly articulate arguments. But, alas, the point of the unicorn myth is to teach the kids that you can't absolutely prove that the unicorns don't exist, so Edwin wouldn't give her the prize. It was a marvel to listen to this kid speak and reason through it though.
Amanda Metskas is also pretty awesome and you can imagine, incredibly sharp and well educated. I know her well - her husband August officiated my wedding and I officiated theirs. Thanks for linking to that interview. I enjoyed the first atheist parenting book "Parenting Beyond Belief" and look forward to reading "Raising Freethinkers." |

There is one here in Ontario, unfortunately I think both my kids are too old now. But I just might offer my services as a nature leader, maybe give 'em a slide show. |
