Moakley.....
There are a lot of experts out there that don't agree, but I personally think you're dead on right on your high cap strategy. In fact, the way things have been going the last five or six months, it's the only thing that I would bet heavy on right now!
If it's any consolation, I'm with you 100% on this one, Moakley!
Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!! |

The company I work for has a sister-plant (sort of) in the city of Gävle. Because one of the top managers apparently hail from there, whenever there has been cut-backs, my plant has always suffered more than Gävle. But whenever there has been cut-backs in personel, my place have had good and reasoned discussions with the union about which people to sack. Thanks to this enabling smart decisions, my plant has distilled technical competence in our work-force. The last 10 years Gävle has fallen behind i technical skills, productivity, qualiity, and workforce motivation.
The beginning of this week, Ericsson announced that the Gävle plant is going to be shut down. Assembly of the new products is simpler and require less time and work, by shutting down Gävle and move the essentials to my plant, we consolidate our recources and actually have to hire a few more people here, where I work. At the same time, my plant strengthens it's role as an Industrialization and Master Unit plant for almost all new 3G and 4G mobile phone base-stations. That means that all prototypes of the new products is being built here. We're the ones who has to secure productivity through cooperation with R&D. It's a huge responsibility, but Ericsson Kumla has always shown we're up for the task.
My economy is stable, and my work is secure for at least 3-5 years (and probably more)ahead. So, all-in-all, I'm in good shape. |

So a year on how is everyone's economy progressing? I am still at the very strange job I took last June, it remains strange and there is still very little security to it. The owners started trying to sell the company in a fire sale in September last year, and have stopped funding it since then. I have managed to keep it afloat, and they do treat me very well...but it is a strange situation to be sure. Recently we do have a very interested buyer, And I am point man in trying to close the deal, but they probably will not hire me as part of the buy out as I am more expensive than they usually pay for company managers and they have a slew of managers in their company already...wild life. Hows by yous? |

My yearly review by the boss put me at the top 10% of my coworkers, which is good. Apart from a few bucks more in the salary, being on the management's good side, it will be easier to call in favours like getting priority when asking for days off during holidays, or changing work hours. The last is not unimportant: I'm working on getting back to the night shift. It means $150US extra after taxes, and only 32hrs (4 nights)/week (which makes for good opportunities to do overtime). I installed a 3-indoor-units air conditioning in my apartment last summer/autumn and it's been running for a few weeks now because of unusually hot weather; the loans on the condo and the air conditioning was renegotiated last week and the interest was fixed below 4% for a 5-year stretch. Which is good since the interest rates are expected to rise. Having a set rate for a long period ensures that we always have control over how much we are paying.
So, I'm good.

My situation is probably the most different than anyone else here on the forum. My lifestyle has me pretty much recession proof. I have no mortgage, no rent, no kids and no wife/husband. Anyone here who has these or even one, knows what that costs if they pay or help pay the bills. However for other people here in the territory, the economy slowed depending upon which economic engine their tied to. Several restaurants have died but their locations became new ones. Big construction has died. What was started has stopped. Pre construction sales have stopped and funding has stopped, so what was being built has stopped almost completely. The three major projects are in moth balls (like, Las Vegas construction). Tourism had dropped off a lot but has recovered about 80%, not completely. Any business that didn't go under by now will not. I suspect we here are better off than other places because people who have money still take vacations. Here it's mostly tourism. I do all electrical and general repair so sooner or later I get work. SS |

I have a little work at the moment. If work keeps rolling in then I might get back to normal. I just can't tell yet. I do have a couple of jobs to go to after I'm done with the one I'm doing. And that's a big change. What worries me is that out of four clients over the last couple of months, including those coming up, only one of them is new. And one of them was for family. And before that, it was for family. (Washington.) I can't sustain any momentum if I have to rely on only those people that I have worked for before and family. I mean, there are only so many of them... |

In general response to chefcrsh's question, I live on investment income; I lost a bundle starting with 9/11, and stupidly continued doing the same basic thing through the market disasters of 2003 and early 2009. I am now learning contrarian strategy the hard way and beginning to recoup some major losses. I may still be able to bow out leaving some semblence of a decent estate. The trick today is trading precious metals which continue to wildly appreciate despite current bearish market conditions - hellishly dangerous though, because although gold zepplins really go up from time to time, they come down quickly with a thunderous crash!
I have returned to a decent standard of living! |

Yes. That's always a possibility. It always as been. I do that from time to time. Good thing too, because when I had my back surgery, I had finished a year working for a contractor who paid me with payroll checks, which meant that I was eligible for disability. It was while I was recovering that the recession hit and the phone stopped ringing. I was able to get by for several months because I was still on disability. Anyhow, no contractor is calling. And yes, I have called them and I have answered some ads. But so far, no work has come from that. |

Not at all bngbuck. I'm in the US Virgin Is., St John. In the 2000 census it came in just <5000. It' tropical and get's tourists during winter more than summer. With peaks during Thanksgiving, Xmas/New Years and Feb. through March. Restaurants are reliant on tourists as they must make it during the peaks so they can pay rent through the off cycles. Employees have to a tough go and make little during slow stints. I don't know how they do it as apartment rents can be fairly high. Many come down and leave after some months or when it goes off season. There are many property owners who own nice investment homes, with ocean views that rent weekly at 1.8 to $5k a week. They live in the states and come down when they don't rent to tourists. They're doing good if they can get 30 +weeks a year. Property sales have ground to a trickle but prices were in the the stratosphere. People who want to sell are being pummeled and they only sell if they are in trouble but money is tight as we all know. Even then No property owner want to take a loss selling a piece of "Paradise" because about 2/3 of this island is national park or preserve so private land is limited and is priced accordingly. The island is about 5 x 10 miles roughly. SS |
