This has, thus far, a pretty amazing year, politically speaking. I look for it to become even more eccentric as the Republican Party discards it's meds all together and checks into the Great, Political Sanatorium just on other side of La-La Land. The latest whacko in the lineup is Gov. Mark Sanford of SC who has mysteriously disappeared, somewhat to the at least temporary benefit to his state. There are a number of theories concerning this, none, at this writing, making much sense. The most prevalent theory, currently, is that the gov has gone hiking in the mountains. As this is the silliest, it might be true. In a new twist to an already-bizarre episode, South Carolina's lieutenant governor said Monday night that neither he nor Gov. Mark Sanford's staff know where the governor is and that Sanford's office refused his demand to talk to his fellow Republican.
Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, who was elected separately from Sanford, issued a statement to POLITICO after a day of frenzied national speculation about the governor's whereabouts.
Bauer said he called Sanford's office Monday and requested an “immediate phone conversation with the governor.”
“That request was denied because the governor's chief of staff does not know where the governor is, and has not communicated with the governor since he left South Carolina last Thursday,” Bauer said. “I cannot take lightly that his staff has not had communication with him for more than four days, and that no one, including his own family, knows his whereabouts.” |
Curiouser & curiouser, eh?
“I apologize for taking so long to send this update, and was waiting to see if a more definitive idea of what part of the trail he was on before we did so,” Sawyer said in the statement.
Yet asked if he had spoken with Sanford, Sawyer wrote in an email message: “No, not today.”
And the spokesman wouldn't say where on the approximately 2,175-mile long trail Sanford is.
“We're not discussing location, other than to say he's on the trail,” Sawyer wrote.
As for Bauer's accusation, Sawyer shot back: “We actually just tried to call the Lt. Gov., and he didn't call back.”
| Welladay! Now, there's other aspects of this to consider -- has anyone inventoried the state treasury lately? And if so, has it come up short?
Has he gone into seclusion to write the Great American Drivel Novel -- if so, he's picked a hell of a time do it!
Could it be that he is sharing space with Jimmy Hoffa under a parking lot somewhere in Jersey?
Or has he completely slipped his moorings and will soon be found passing around a bottle of Night Train in a hobo jungle?
I dunno and, like the rest of us, must await further developments.
I was so tempted to put this in Humor, but that would be in poor taste, even by my standards.

Heh, either that or a voyeur....
What grabs me is that the guy just bugged out. Dumped all of his responsibilities and split without a yes-no-go-to-hell to anybody. He could have at least left a memo that he was going to watch nekkid people frolic in the woods for a few days.
And he is (was) considered a presidential contender in '12. Damn. As strongly as I despise Republicans, I rather hate to see them fall to pieces this way.
On the other hand, could it be evolution in action?

It's been reported that he isnt even on the trail but that he snuck off to South America somewheres for some reason, my guess is he went to see John of God. |

| Oh, that would be just too sweet! For those who might not know who J of G is, here's a link to another of my favorite charlatans. Yowsa!
It might resound with the Repubican base, though.

A couple days ago, NPR reported that either his chief of staff or the Lt. Governor (I don't remember which) said that he knew where the Gov was. So who's lying? |

| Mystery solved.... maybe. Argentina it seems to be. * Sanford's aides had said he was hiking on U.S. trail * Secretive absence seen hurting presidential aspirations (Adds quote, background, paragraphs 3-4, 14)
By Matthew Bigg
ATLANTA, June 24 (Reuters) - South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford returned to the United States on Wednesday from a secret private trip to Argentina, ending days of speculation over his whereabouts and raising questions about his judgment.
| Now, of course, the question becomes: whaddafork is in Argentina that entices the governer of a state to sneak down there like a thief in the night? I mean, John of God is in Brazil, for the love of a Jew on a stick! And Argentina is run by a raving, freakin' socialist -- eek!
Oh, this gets better by the minute.
Edit: Hadn't seen this; evidently there is indeed a divine Argentine.
Everything's ok now -- his name's not Clinton.

| Well, I don't know how this could get any worse. Unless, of course, the piddling trip was on the tax payers dime. |

The fact that the head exec of the state was AWOL and no one knew where he was is reason enough to impeach him.
But if it was on taxpayer money....epic! |

Plus I read somewhere that there is still a law in SC that an adulterer can be fined and/or put in jail. |

Do you figure there's any chance of either of those happening, or will they try to move on to new business, hoping everyone will forget about this by 2012?

"Don't cry for me Argentina," eh?
I doubt if even he is stupid enough to put his borderline treason (couldn't he at least philander American? ) on SC's dime. But should it come out that he did, the repercussions will be severe for him and the entire Republican Party. After all, Sanford was considered "Mr. Conservative." This also flenses the presidential field nearly to the bone. Who the hell is left than is not a proven idiot?
At the moment, it could be that Mitt Romney might get the elephant's call to be skinned alive by Obama. Of course, that could change and he goes with an unknown -- a better option, I think.
Ah Schadenfreude, thy kiss is so sweet, thy breath so soothing unto my soul....
