I really don't know what to make of this. Initially, it reads like something out of Harry Potter, but the procedure seems pretty straightforward, albeit a tad weird.

Blind man sees again
by Chris in Paris on 7/05/2009 03:41:00 AM
This is an amazing story, assuming this is not one of those crazy stories from the British press. It's being carried by both Sky and The Telegraph so far as well as the tabloid outlets so it looks like it's for real.
And from the link to the Telegraph article:

I've never heard of such a procedure. If indeed it's the real deal, it's pretty damn' amazing and I'd expect there might be a a fair of snaggle-toothed people walking around in the future.

But what if he gets a cavity; what then? OUCH!

Believe it or not, this seems to be real. I searched "tooth AND eye AND cheek" at PubMed & came up with a bunch of papers in the medical literature about it. And, CS Liu at Sussex Eye Hospital does, indeed, seem to be the only ophthalmologist in Britain who does these (as the linked articles claim).

This is called an osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (that links to a google search on that term; the Wikipedia page says it was pioneered in 1963 in Italy, & gives a "recipe" for how to do it, but of course I could have just faked that page, so feel free to check it out at other sites, too).

I was betting, on first read of your OP & links, that it was a hoax. where's the scar on the guy's cheek? How come we can't see a big gap Where his "eyetooth" used to be? (in his mouth, that is) But it looks like the surgeon is that good at his craft. Crazy stuff!

It's too bad that the procedure didn't involve making the eye look better to others. This looks passing creepy. But it's surely grand that this fellow can see again!

Here is a detailed description of the procedure with photos: Modified Osteo-odonto Keratoprosthesis

Warning: the photos are graphic as would be expected with any photos of a surgical procedure.

Holy Mack'l! Andy! That is downright, gob-smackingly amazing.
Although the procedure is complex and involves time, energy and effort from surgeons dealing with multiple specialties, it offers desperate patients hope for sight. It is however, not a simple procedure, and the complexity of the surgery requires meticulous attention to detail, asepsis and technique. The procedure does provide useful functional vision to the patient, although the field of vision tends to be limited.
Limited field is one hell of a lot better than no field at all, and the folks who came up with and performed this should all get Nobels.

Thanks for the article, lorddix, and don't worry about graphic illustrations in here; nobody else does. Within reason, of course. Gratuitous porn is frowned upon (*sigh*).
