When the Nazis came for the communists, I remained silent; I was not a communist. When they locked up the social democrats, I remained silent; I was not a social democrat. When they came for the trade unionists, I did not speak out; I was not a trade unionist. When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out.

I have to say that there is some great quotes out there, but some fantastic ones have been brewed up by you folks here at SFN.

I have been a lurker for a bit of time now and I have to say one of the best quotes I have seen in awhile - at least in that it made me shoot beer out of my nose when I first read it- was from Filthy in another thread.

Filthy:
From the dawn of sapience, philosophers have been full of shit and the skeptic has been their Gallipoli.

In fact, I think I might just add that to my regular email signature.

A series of fun one-liners about various pseudoscientific claims and, even better, a concise description of the scientific method - Ken Feder on Skeptic Friends Network from "Frauds, Myths and Mysteries"

Welcome to (posting at) SFN, AnthroGeek! Yup. Filthy's a fountain of trenchant prose. He's penned many a memorable line.

Thanks for the welcome.

Although more of a small passage than a quotable line, I still like the wit and truth of it.

"Where is that Goshen of mediocrity in which a smattering of science and learning will pass for profound instruction, where platitudes will be accepted as wisdom, bigoted narrowness as holy zeal, unctuous egoism as God-given piety? Let such a man become an evangelical preacher..."-Mary Ann Evans (aka George Eliot) from Evangelical Teaching

That is a great quote indeed.

And Welcome AnthroGeek!

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

Some very funny (to me at least) deliberately pseudo-intellectual nonsense quotes by John G. Fuller, from "Wisdom to Live By" in the 1961 edition of Harvey Kurtzman's Help! Magazine:

"Ideology is to genuine sensitivity as reflections are to capabilities."

"The dark night of the soul follows neither instruction nor the sentient adult."

"In the survival of caprice lies the perfection of uniformity."

"He is less remote from censure who finds the pain of little ignorance."

"Wisdom suffers only when triumph meets conviction."

"Prevention in no way alters the absolutes without which accomplishment cannot succeed."
